Just hours before the scheduled inauguration of the Osun State presidential campaign committee for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election, the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has distanced itself from the event, stating it was left completely in the dark.
In a statement issued by the state APC Chairman, Tajudeen Lawal, the party expressed strong reservations about how the committee, coordinated by Governor Ademola Adeleke, was put together.
While affirming its total commitment to President Tinubu’s return to office, the APC stressed that an initiative of such magnitude demands proper planning and official protocol.
“We are talking about the re-election of the President of the nation under the largest democratic party in sub-Saharan Africa, and not the election of a council chairman or a councillor. Such an exercise requires the highest level of official protocol to ensure its success,” Lawal stated.
The party chairman revealed that the state leadership only learned about the committee through a social media list released by Governor Adeleke’s spokesperson, Malam Olawale Rasheed, less than 24 hours before the event. He argued that the extremely short notice effectively shut out key stakeholders and leaders who would have otherwise participated.
Furthermore, the APC alleged that rushing the announcement without prior consultation with party leaders was an intentional ploy to stoke friction between the state chapter and the governor, who serves as the campaign coordinator.
Despite these administrative grievances, the party clarified that it is not opposed to cross-party collaboration for President Tinubu’s mandate.
“We are reiterating the fact that we are not opposed to making concessions for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu… We also agree that the appointment of Governor Adeleke as the state coordinator would boost our candidate’s chances through joint efforts,” Lawal added.
The APC maintained, however, that critical national projects of this nature must be handled with utmost transparency and seriousness rather than levity.
