Five people were killed and three others injured when gunmen opened fire on people attending a wedding event in the University police station limits on Tuesday, police said. Talking to media District Police Officer(DPO) Ziauddin Ahmed said the incident appeared to have stemmed from a longstanding personal and political dispute between two groups.
He said the two groups came face to face after a volleyball match held in connection with the wedding celebrations, following which firing took place.
The incident occurred near a girls’ school in Malana village, where people were heading to attend the wedding.
The deceased were identified as Muhammad Shafiq, son of Bashir Ahmed; Muhammad Ajmal, son of Hidayatullah; Qudratullah, son of Samiullah; Umar Farooq, son of Ghulam Farooq; and Arsalan, son of Ghulam Jilani.
The injured include Saadullah, son of Kifayatullah, and brothers Qaiser and Fazal, sons of Altaf, hospital sources said. The bodies and injured were shifted to hospital following the shooting. The police has registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident.
