The United Nations has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the people of Afghanistan through crises, protecting their human rights, and assisting vulnerable groups in the country as it marks the 81st anniversary of its founding.
On Friday night, October 23, the organization released a video marking its 81st anniversary, praising the resilience of Afghans in the face of crises, conflict, poverty, and displacement.
According to the video, millions of people in Afghanistan face enormous challenges amid conflict, poverty, displacement, and climate shocks.
The UN said the consequences of these crises continue to affect people’s lives and limit families’ access to basic necessities.
The video also highlighted the situation of Afghan women and girls, noting that they face social and structural restrictions.
The organization outlined its work in Afghanistan, including distributing food assistance, improving nutrition, providing healthcare services, expanding educational opportunities, and supporting displaced and returning families.
Emphasizing the importance of human rights, dialogue for peace, and ensuring the free participation of women and girls in society, the UN said lasting peace would remain unattainable without creating opportunities for all segments of society to participate.
The UN’s renewed commitment to protecting and supporting Afghans comes as millions of people continue to face worsening poverty, while Taliban-imposed restrictions have effectively excluded half of Afghanistan’s population—women and girls—from public life.
