The Gkrava gas odour remains unexplained after a second inspection found no natural gas leak at the school complex in Athens, the City of Athens said on Monday.
A private company carried out the secondary inspection for the municipality. It finished on Sunday night and detected no leak, according to its findings.
The school complex will stay closed until all necessary checks are complete. Lessons will continue through remote learning, the city said.
At the same time, the municipality wants the responsible agencies to find the source of the Gkrava gas odour. It is seeking clear answers about an incident that worried the school community.
Despite the finding, the cause remains unclear. The city again called on the Ministry of Education to instruct the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE) to carry out the necessary checks.
It also asked the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection to fully investigate the incident.
The city said it had taken every necessary action as soon as it learned of the smell. It pledged to do everything within its remit, adding that the safety of pupils, teachers and staff is non-negotiable.
Athens Mayor Haris Doukas said on Sunday that the schools would stay closed until the authorities found a safe solution.
However, the city said the main question remains open: if there was no leak, what caused the Gkrava gas odour?
It expects an answer when the responsible agencies complete their investigation.
