Ten members of the Judicial Service Commission have taken their oaths of office at Chichiri Court House in Blantyre, in a ceremony presided over by Chief Justice Rezine Mzikamanda.
The commissioners were handpicked by President Peter Mutharika in May this year to oversee the regulation and administration of Malawi’s Judicial Service.
The line-up includes Dorothy Kamanga, Dick Sankhulani, Arthur Chibwana, Solicitor General Gertrude Hiwa, Shabir Latif SC, Chikosa Banda, Ellen Chapita Banda, Edith Wakondiye Chikagwa, Dr Rabiya Hanif and Victor Mhango.
Speaking after the ceremony, the Chief Justice pressed the new commissioners to carry out their duties with professionalism.
She stressed that the commission must remain independent and free from outside interference, a warning that will resonate in a country where the judiciary’s autonomy is frequently debated.
Mhango, speaking on behalf of the group, pledged that the commissioners would work hard and discharge their duties professionally in serving the Judicial Service Commission.
