A 16-year-old boy has shot dead three children and a teacher at a primary school in the US state of Oregon before being killed by a community member, police have said.
The shooting occurred at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend on Thursday afternoon, leaving the community in shock.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the suspect forced his way into the school by shooting at locked doors.
The teenager was killed by a community member who pursued him into the building and confronted him, Krantz said.
The children killed were aged five, eight and 11, while a seven-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were taken to hospital in critical condition.
Police said the suspect was a local teenager but did not disclose his identity or establish whether he had any connection to the school.
Bend Police Department spokeswoman Sheila Miller said officers were alerted to an active shooter at 12:59 p.m. local time, or 19:59 GMT.
The first emergency call came from a person who reported that an unknown gunman was firing at their vehicle with a long gun.
Police later received emergency calls reporting that the attacker had entered the school.
According to investigators, the suspect shot at the locks on the school doors to force his way inside.
A community member who witnessed the attack pursued the teenager into the school and shot him dead.
Police officers arrived approximately three minutes after the first emergency call and confirmed that the suspect had been killed before searching the building.
“We are stunned and heartbroken by this senseless tragedy,” Steven Cook, the school district’s top administrative official, said in a statement.
“No words can adequately express the grief our community is experiencing.”
Schools in Bend were closed on Friday to allow the community time to mourn and recover from the tragedy.
Silver Rail Elementary School has approximately 450 pupils and more than 40 adult staff members, according to police.
The shooting adds to concerns over gun violence in American schools.
The K-12 School Shooting Database recorded 235 shooting incidents at US schools last year, with at least 140 reported so far this year, according to the figures cited in the report.
Police have not disclosed a motive for the attack, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting are continuing.
