A new global risk map has identified the world’s highest-risk countries for 2027.
The assessment appears in the 2027 Global Risk Map published by US security firm Global Guardian, which evaluates security conditions across countries and regions worldwide.
The map assesses seven key factors: crime, armed conflict, terrorism, political unrest, healthcare systems, infrastructure and natural disasters. Countries and regions are then assigned risk levels ranging from low to extreme.
Croatia is marked in green on the map, indicating a low level of overall risk. Several other European countries, including Switzerland, Norway and Denmark, are also placed in the low-risk category.
Croatia is considered safer for travellers, businesses and international organisations.
The findings highlight the contrast between much of Europe and regions affected by armed conflict, political instability and persistent security threats.
Countries facing the highest risks
Some of the world’s highest-risk areas are concentrated in the Middle East and Africa, where conflict, terrorism and political instability continue to pose significant challenges.
Iran, Yemen and Sudan are among the countries identified as facing extreme risks. The assessment also places Ukraine in the highest-risk category, alongside Russian territory bordering the country.
Parts of northern and central Africa, including Sudan, Ethiopia and Nigeria, are also classified as extreme-risk areas because of factors including armed conflict, terrorism, banditry and violent crime.
In Egypt, the northern part of the Sinai Peninsula is identified as an area of extreme risk. The peninsula occupies a strategically important position between Africa and the Middle East.
How other countries compare
The assessment assigns different risk levels to countries across the Americas, Europe and the Middle East.
The United Kingdom and the United States are classified as moderate-risk countries, while the Republic of Ireland is placed in the low-risk category.
In the Middle East, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Oman fall into the moderate-risk category.
Parts of South America are also identified as high-risk areas, including Venezuela and areas near its borders with Colombia and Brazil.

The map also highlights significant differences in security conditions within individual countries. Parts of the Mexican border region, for example, are classified as extreme risk.
Global Guardian’s assessment is intended to help organisations and travellers understand potential security threats when making decisions about international travel and operations.
However, a country’s overall classification does not mean that every location within its borders carries the same level of risk. Conditions can vary considerably between cities, regions and individual destinations.
For Croatia, the low-risk classification places the country among the destinations assessed as presenting relatively limited overall security risks in the 2027 map.
