US federal agents searched Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s Washington-area home on Monday under a court-authorised warrant. The Justice Department confirmed an ongoing criminal investigation but has not disclosed its specific focus or announced any charges.
Federal agents searched the Washington-area home of Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar on Monday, 12 October, as part of an ongoing criminal investigation, according to the Associated Press.
Ilhan Omar's Washington home searched by Homeland Security
The search was conducted by agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the investigative arm of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The US Department of Justice confirmed that the operation was carried out under a judicially authorised search warrant, but did not disclose the nature of the investigation.
“This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation,” the department said in a statement.
he development has raised questions about the focus of the inquiry, particularly given the scrutiny Omar has faced from President Donald Trump and other Republican figures over her immigration history.
However, officials have not publicly established what evidence investigators are seeking or whether the congresswoman herself is the subject of any specific allegation.

What is the investigation about?
The Justice Department has not released details about the case. However, Reuters, citing Fox News Digital, reported that the investigation concerns immigration paperwork allegedly completed by Omar’s late father when she was a child.
The allegations surrounding her family’s immigration history have previously featured in political attacks against the congresswoman. Omar has consistently rejected claims of immigration fraud.
The reported focus of the investigation has not been independently confirmed by the Justice Department. The available information also does not establish whether the search has resulted in the discovery of evidence supporting any allegation.
No charges against Omar were announced in the initial reports on Monday.
What has the Justice Department said?
The department confirmed that Homeland Security Investigations agents executed a search warrant in the Washington, DC, area.
It did not identify the precise allegations under investigation or provide further information about the material sought during the operation.
People familiar with the matter told the Associated Press that HSI agents conducted the search. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to discuss the investigation publicly.
The Associated Press reported that an email seeking comment had been sent to a representative for Omar. The initial report did not include a response from her office.
A search warrant does not, by itself, establish criminal wrongdoing. The investigation remains ongoing, and the publicly available information does not clarify whether prosecutors intend to pursue charges.

Who is Ilhan Omar?
Omar, 44, represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, which includes Minneapolis. She was first elected to the US House of Representatives in 2018 and has since become a prominent figure in the Democratic Party’s progressive wing.
She is also associated with a group of progressive Democratic congresswomen commonly known as The Squad. Omar has frequently criticised Republican policies and has been a vocal opponent of Trump.
The search of her home comes amid renewed attention to allegations about her immigration history. But the precise scope of the federal inquiry, the evidence being examined and its potential consequences remain unclear.
For now, the confirmed facts are limited: federal agents searched Omar’s residence under a court-authorised warrant, the Justice Department has acknowledged an ongoing criminal investigation, and authorities have not publicly announced charges against her.
