Standout destination amid the Mornington Peninsula’s many wine diners.
A sleek limestone lair tucked into a vine-covered hill, this could be the mega-ritzy peninsula’s loveliest winery dining room. New chef Hayden Ellis – kitchen royalty in these parts after his years at heavy hitter Ten Minutes by Tractor – has written a menu that’s just as magnetic as the view.
Sweet-fleshed, charry-skinned quail with warmly spiced Jerusalem artichoke puree and nutty vin jaune sauce is a trio greater than the sum of its parts. Meaty tiles of fried grouper with celeriac remoulade, beurre blanc and triple-cooked potatoes – a posh play on fish and chips – is at once stonkingly rich, deeply comforting and deserving of another glass of single-block chardonnay.
Elegant flavours might be the raison d’etre, but these are balanced with the broad appeal of beef short-rib hitting its cold weather stride with rich onion consomme. A golden syrup dumpling in a puddle of creme anglaise, meanwhile, equals peak nostalgia.
Best for: An indulgent day trip or, better yet, an overnight stay in the luxe on-site accommodation.
