By Zoila Palma: Pope Leo XIV was discharged from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on October 17, four days after undergoing surgery to remove part of his right lung following a diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma.
The pontiff left the hospital at approximately 3:30 p.m., waving to well-wishers and journalists gathered outside.
In a joint statement, his personal physician, Dr. Luigi Carbone, and chief surgeon, Dr. Stefano Margaritora, said the pope was fit for discharge following an assessment of his clinical condition, blood tests and chest X-ray.
Before leaving the hospital, Pope Leo celebrated noon Mass, continuing a practice he had followed during his recovery. He also stopped to speak with Varvara, a 13-year-old Ukrainian girl who had previously met him while receiving cancer treatment in Rome.
With the help of a Ukrainian priest serving as translator, the girl told the pope that his embrace before her own cancer surgery in December had given her “the strength to overcome the illness.” She presented him with a photograph of their embrace in St. Peter’s Square and a handmade felt toy modeled after him.
The pope’s discharge came earlier than initially anticipated. The Holy See Press Office had previously indicated that he might remain hospitalized for approximately a week following his admission on October 13. During the 90-minute video-assisted operation, surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung.
The Vatican subsequently confirmed that he had been diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma, a type of lung cancer.
Pope Leo had announced the planned surgery during his Angelus address on October 11, explaining that medical examinations had detected a “well-contained” lung nodule at a very early stage.
