UMass started this season 4-0 but is now riding an underwhelming streak of three straight losses into Friday’s face-off against independent rival UConn. The 3-3 Huskies managed a 34-20 triumph over Temple at Lincoln Financial Field a fortnight ago and are hoping to pick up where they left off following a bye week.
Massachusetts, on the other hand, may be glad for the distraction from MAC play after losing three on the bounce against its conference rivals. The Minutemen are 4-3 overall (1-2 in the MAC) but might have been looking at a far different season after following up a 20-19 loss to Miami (OH) with a 25-18 overtime defeat at Buffalo last week.
With games against Toledo and Bowling Green still to come in November, head coach Joe Harasymiak still has time enough to turn things around in the MAC. This will be the first time either he or UConn counterpart Jason Candle has had a taste of this emerging rivalry, giving each a desperate reason to start as they mean to go on.
UConn quarterback Kalieb Osborne has impressed with 10 passing touchdowns and six running scores of his own so far this season. Attempting to hunt him down will be senior UMass linebacker Timmy Hinspeter, whose 64 tackles so far this season put him just outside the NCAA’s top 10 at present.
