Uzbekistan plans to plant 140 mn saplings during the autumn 2026 season as part of the nationwide Yashil Makon (Green Space) project, according to the Agency for the Expansion of Forests and Green Areas and Combating Desertification.
Under a presidential decree issued on September 23, tree-planting activities will be organized using new approaches starting this autumn. The main priorities include selecting saplings suitable for each region, ensuring timely irrigation and providing systematic care.
The autumn planting season will begin on different dates across Uzbekistan:
November 1: Republic of Karakalpakstan and Khorezm region.
November 5: Bukhara and Navoi regions.
November 10: Andijan, Jizzakh, Samarkand, Syrdarya, Namangan, Tashkent and Fergana regions, as well as Tashkent city.
November 20: Surkhandarya and Kashkadarya regions.
The decision to plant 140mn saplings in autumn takes into account the higher moisture levels during autumn and winter, which increase sapling survival rates. During the current season, 257 Green Gardens and Green Public Parks will be established. Their number is planned to increase to 1,023 by 2030. By 2030, five shaded pedestrian walkways, each measuring at least 10 kilometers, are planned for every district and city.
Since October 1, approximately 4,200 forestry mentors have been assigned to 8,992 mahallas across Uzbekistan. They will assist residents with planting and maintaining trees, as well as preparing requests on behalf of their neighborhoods. Starting January 1, 2027, a "Greening the Mahalla" package will be introduced based on requests from mahallas. The package will include sapling delivery, protection against diseases and pests, organic fertilizers and water-efficient irrigation systems.
Beginning this autumn, micro-forests will be established in mahallas with limited land, among multi-story apartment buildings, and on the grounds of schools and kindergartens. In areas where land cannot be allocated or where surfaces are covered with asphalt or concrete, small public gardens will be created.
