Oklahoma City Thunder rookie center Aday Mara made a strong first impression in his NBA regular-season debut Tuesday, blocking a Victor Wembanyama alley-oop dunk attempt during his team’s 116-104 statement road win over the San Antonio Spurs.
The play came in the sides’ first meeting since San Antonio eliminated OKC from the 2026 Western Conference finals, fueling hopes that the 7-foot-3 Mara could be the Thunder’s long-term answer to the 7-foot-4 French phenom.
Aday Mara’s Highlight Block on Victor Wembanyama Ignites Talk of ‘Wemby Stopper’ Potential
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander poured in a game-high 32 points as the Thunder went in front five minutes in and never gave the lead back, in a rematch that turned heated in the second quarter when De’Aaron Fox was hit with a flagrant foul for throwing Chet Holmgren to the floor.
Wembanyama uncharacteristically missed his first 12 shots in a career-worst shooting performance. The two-time All-Star’s lone made field goal was an alley-oop slam off a feed from Fox as time expired in the third quarter. He finished with 12 points on 1-for-13 shooting (7.7%), including 0-for-4 from deep, with 10 of his points coming at the free-throw line.
Mara’s rejection put an exclamation point on OKC’s successful bid to contain the 22-year-old. With San Antonio trailing 82-70 late in the third quarter, the Spaniard met Wembanyama at the rim and sent him packing before sprinting up the court and converting an alley-oop jam of his own on the fast break.
“Aday Mara on both ends,” NBA Central captioned the play.
Coming off the bench behind starting bigs Isaiah Hartenstein and Holmgren, the rookie saw limited action. He finished with 7 points on 3-for-4 shooting (75%), 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block, and 1 turnover in 12 minutes, posting a plus-9 plus-minus. Still, he made his presence felt.
“Aday Mara is insane,” one fan reacted to the big man’s highlight block and finish.
Hoops Reference, an NBA YouTuber, went a step further: “Aday Mara just did something to Wemby I’ve never seen anyone ever do to Wemby before…”
Basketball University connected the clip to the Thunder front office’s savvy roster-building: “This is exactly why OKC drafted Aday Mara…”
The Thunder took the Michigan product 12th in this year’s draft, less than a month after their 111-103 Game 7 home loss to San Antonio. Wembanyama was named Western Conference finals MVP after averaging 27.3 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks per game in the series, making it paramount to find an answer for the Spurs superstar.
Six Rings of Steel, an NBA content creator, was left in disbelief Tuesday: “Aday Mara, are you kidding me, how did we let him fall to OKC!?!?”
Size and rim protection are why some draft analysts pegged Mara as a potential counter to Wembanyama. The 21-year-old carries a 7-foot-6 wingspan and led the Big Ten with 2.6 bpg in his lone season at Michigan, earning the conference’s 2026 Defensive Player of the Year honors on his way to winning a national championship.
Mara also turned heads in the NBA preseason, scoring 22 points on perfect 10-for-10 shooting against the Milwaukee Bucks on Oct. 7 and swatting 4 shots against the Atlanta Hawks on Oct. 12.
Another fan put it in the plainest terms: “Aday Mara is the Wemby stopper.”
Asked on draft night about being viewed as a possible Wembanyama stopper, Mara said: “Obviously it’s not a bad thing to hear. I think it’s going to take time for adjustment, but I’m excited.”
