The President of the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas, Dr Gertie Chimeka-Anyanwoke, has urged medical doctors and health professionals to establish health facilities and initiatives in their home country.
Chimeka-Anyanwoke disclosed this to Diaspora Tales at the inauguration of the Redeemer’s Health Village and RoboMed Academy Robotics and Advanced Surgery Training Centre at the Redemption Camp, Mowe, Ogun State, on Friday.
The ANPA leader said the brain drain that Nigeria had suffered over the years would result in brain gain if more medical practitioners invested in the healthcare sector.
“It is time we came back home to invest in the healthcare sector of our dear country. I think more doctors, surgeons and other health experts who have gained prominence abroad should begin to help the system in Nigeria,” Chimeka-Anyanwoke said.
“As you can see, robotic surgeries that are being done in the United States have been brought to Nigeria. We’re having a lot of engagement from our people in the US and other foreign countries.
“The experience, training and exposure that we have in the US and other places should be applied to address our healthcare challenges in Nigeria. We need to do that a lot.”
She, however, stated that the country’s healthcare sector needed more attention from the Federal Government for the accessibility of Nigerians.
“The challenges of the Nigerian healthcare system are a hydra-headed problem. I don’t know if anybody has really found a perfect solution to it. The government has to invest in funding and research because all countries have different solutions,” she added.
