The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to developing globally competitive Nigerian seafarers through expanded training, professional certification and practical onboard experience.

Oyetola disclosed this in a post on his X account on Friday, following the celebration of World Maritime Day 2026 in Lagos, where he outlined the government’s efforts to strengthen the country’s maritime sector and harness the potential of its marine and blue economy.

“On the occasion of the World Maritime Day 2026 which we marked in Lagos today, I reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to developing globally competitive Nigerian seafarers through expanded training, professional certification and practical onboard experience,” the minister stated.
He said the government was strengthening partnerships, modernising ports, improving maritime security and investing in fisheries and aquaculture to create jobs, boost productivity and enhance food security.

Oyetola also highlighted growth in fish production, which he said rose from 1.1 million to 1.4 million metric tonnes in 2025.
“With fish production rising from 1.1 million to 1.4 million metric tonnes in 2025, we are building on this progress through responsible aquaculture, improved processing and better market access,” he said.
The minister added that the government’s focus was to translate policies into practical outcomes, improve Nigeria’s competitiveness in the maritime industry and expand opportunities across the marine and blue economy.
“Our focus is to translate policy into practice, strengthen Nigeria’s maritime competitiveness and unlock the full potential of our Marine and Blue Economy for the benefit of all Nigerians,” Oyetola stated.
