Pradyut Dhar Chowdhury, an accused in the murder case of former Bharat Ratna Sangha secretary Durga Prasanna of Usha Bazar, died at GBP Hospital on Friday after being shifted from Bishalgarh Central Jail following a medical emergency. His death has triggered fresh questions after family members alleged that a delay in administering critical treatment may have contributed to the tragedy.
According to family members, Pradyut suddenly developed serious health complications inside Bishalgarh Central Jail on Friday morning. Jail authorities subsequently transferred him to Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital in Agartala for medical treatment as his condition reportedly deteriorated.
The family has alleged that attending doctors recommended the administration of a costly injection considered necessary for his treatment. However, they claimed that the medical team required a written authorisation before the medicine could be administered. According to the family's version, neither jail officials nor any authorised family member was available at that moment to provide the required consent.
Relatives further alleged that the absence of the necessary authorisation resulted in a delay in treatment, following which Pradyut's condition worsened and he eventually died at the hospital. The family has raised concerns over whether timely intervention could have altered the outcome.
However, these allegations have not been independently verified. Hospital authorities and prison officials have not publicly clarified the exact nature of the medical emergency, the treatment protocol followed, the purpose of the reported injection, or the circumstances surrounding the alleged delay.
The incident has nevertheless sparked debate over the handling of medical emergencies involving inmates, particularly in situations where urgent treatment may require procedural approvals, consent requirements or financial authorisation.
Pradyut Dhar Chowdhury had been lodged in Bishalgarh Central Jail after being arrested in connection with the murder of Durga Prasanna, former secretary of Bharat Ratna Sangha in Usha Bazar. The murder case had drawn considerable public attention following the killing and the subsequent police investigation.
With Pradyut's death occurring while he was in judicial custody, the case has now taken a new turn, raising questions about inmate healthcare, emergency medical procedures and accountability in custodial situations.
