(ANSA) - BEIRA, 16 OTT - The new Situation Room at the Sofala Province Emergency Operations Center was inaugurated today in Beira. It is designed to strengthen the capacity to predict and respond to cyclones, floods, and other extreme events in a region that was severely affected by Cyclone Idai in 2019. The ceremony was attended by the Italian Ambassador to Mozambique, Gabriele Annis; the President of the National Institute for Risk and Disaster Management (INGD), Luisa Meque; and Foreign Minister Manuela Lucas.
Sofala has become the first province in Mozambique to have a Situation Room integrated with the national system and linked to the continental architecture of the African Multi-Hazard Early Warning and Early Action System (AMHEWAS), promoted by the African Union. The facility is one of the outcomes of the Ready2Act project, implemented with the support of Italian Cooperation and technical contributions from the Cima Foundation, the Italian Department of Civil Protection, and the NGO WeWorld.
Over the course of more than two years, the project has strengthened Mozambique’s monitoring, forecasting, and response capabilities through technology transfer, technical training, and the exchange of expertise. This Situation Room complements the one at the National Emergency Operations Center (CENOE) in Maputo, which was inaugurated in September 2025.
“Today we are inaugurating a control room, but above all, we are strengthening a network,” emphasized Luca Ferraris, president of the Cima Foundation. For Annis, the initiative “confirms the value of collaboration with Italy in transforming the ability to anticipate risks into concrete actions to protect people and communities.”
