Kai Trump’s golf season at the University of Miami has hit a major roadblock, as she announced Wednesday that she underwent surgery to repair a wrist injury.
President Donald Trump’s granddaughter, 19, shared the news on Instagram, accompanied by a selfie of her lying in a hospital bed showing off her arm in a cast.
“While I had hoped to avoid surgery, after talks with my family, coaches, and athletic training staff I know I made the best decision for my long-term health and my future in the game I love,” Trump wrote in a statement, explaining that she had sustained the injury during her first tournament of the season.
“It’s certainly not how I envisioned the next few months, but sometimes the journey takes an unexpected turn, and I’m choosing to embrace this one with patience, and a whole lot of determination,” her statement continued.
While she said that her recovery will “take time,” she thanked the “amazing people” around her for their support, including her coaches, family and fellow teammates.
“Having the right people by your side makes all the difference, and I couldn’t be more grateful,” Trump wrote.
She also gave a special shout-out to Dr. Michelle Carlson, a hand surgeon at Manhattan’s Hospital for Special Surgery.
“For now, it’s all about healing, and trusting the process. I can’t wait to be back with my team, doing what I love. I’ll be back before you know it, stronger and more grateful than ever!” the vlogger concluded.
In August, Trump arrived on campus to start her freshman year at the Miami school, which is just under two hours away from her family’s home in Jupiter, Florida.
Her recent surgery comes after she injured her wrist playing in the Golfweek Fall Challenge in September.
She shared the news of her injury with her followers on Instagram at the time.
“Let’s just say there must have been some cart path underneath that ground because it was very hard. Hit it, it felt like a shock on my arm,” Trump said.
“Then on the 10th hole, I hit my driver, and I felt like I tore it again,” she said.
She said that doctors had found a “little sliver” of damage along her ligaments, and was receiving stem cell treatments from a pain management specialist, Dr. Jeffrey Weigers.
Trump has appeared to have had a rough couple of months, as she expressed feeling upset about saying goodbye to her family before leaving for college.
This included her mom, Vanessa Trump, who was previously married to Donald Trump Jr., and was diagnosed with breast cancer this year.
At the 2026 ESPY Awards, Trump gave Page Six an update on her mom’s health, sharing that she was “doing better” as she hit the second phase of her treatment.
