Responding to reported firing, Pakistani forces deployed heavy weapons against positions across the border, targeting locations allegedly used by Afghan Taliban personnel. Security sources claimed that the retaliatory action forced personnel to abandon their posts, with several Taliban members reportedly killed in the exchange. The casualty claims have not been independently verified.
Among the reported targets were the Taliban’s Topsar post and Shipola base camp in Upper Kurram. Security sources claimed that artillery strikes completely destroyed the Shipola installation, underscoring the intensity of the latest confrontation. The exchange of fire was reportedly continuing when initial accounts of the incident emerged, raising concerns over the possibility of further escalation along the volatile border.
The latest clashes come amid mounting tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan over persistent security concerns and allegations of cross-border militant activity.
Pakistan continues to accuse Afghan Taliban authorities of failing to prevent militant groups from operating from Afghan territory and launching attacks inside Pakistan. Kabul’s handling of these concerns remains a major point of friction between the neighbouring countries.
The latest confrontation follows a further deterioration in relations during September, when Pakistan carried out airstrikes inside Afghanistan against locations its government described as terrorist hideouts. The strikes followed major attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. On September 21, Pakistani officials claimed that the operation had killed more than 28 militants.
