Minister of Culture Alberto Beingolea stated today that he hopes for further reflection from the Senate, so that they may understand the necessity of fully approving the request for legislative powers submitted by the Executive Branch.
He noted that the Executive’s position has been clear from the outset, as the request outlines the specific measures deemed necessary.
“We need all of them; that is why we are asking for them,” he emphasized.
Nevertheless, he acknowledged that the Congress of the Republic has the sovereign authority to conduct whatever debate it deems appropriate—as has already occurred in the Chamber of Deputies and is now taking place within the Senate’s Constitution Committee, which will continue its deliberations on the Executive’s request today.
“I will repeat what we have been saying from the beginning: with or without these powers, this government has been working since day one. We will continue to work—specifically to confront our adversary, to tackle crime, and to address the economic challenges facing the Peruvian people—we will keep working,” he stated.
Minister Beingolea pointed to the firm decision to combat crime, exemplified by the creation of a Unified Command comprising the National Police and the Armed Forces, which has already begun to deliver swift, effective blows.
“So, let no one claim that we are just sitting around waiting for these powers. We are not waiting for anything. We do need them—which is why we are requesting them. I hope that the Senate, acting with the wisdom befitting a second chamber—a space for reflection where the heat of political debate gives way to thoughtful consideration—will grant us the requested powers,” he explained.
Visit of Pope Leo XIV
Separately, Minister Beingolea expressed his great joy at the news of Pope Leo XIV’s recovery and the possibility that his planned trip to South America—including a visit to Peru—will go forward.
“I hope, of course, that the Pope will soon be able to be with us, calling upon all the Christian faithful—who are eagerly awaiting his arrival—to join together in prayer. Now is the time to pray daily for the Pope’s health and to await his coming with the same steadfast faith as always, with open arms,” he stated.
Finally, he clarified that, according to the latest information, “everything remains on track” regarding the organization and preparations for the highly anticipated visit of Pope Leo XIV, who acquired Peruvian citizenship while working in Peru prior to assuming the highest office in the Catholic Church.
