Today’s Focus
Chile’s stock market drifted lower on Tuesday. The S&P IPSA, which tracks the largest and most liquid Chilean shares, closed at 10,926.50, down 0.42%.
Lithium producer SQM-B and shopping-centre operator Mallplaza led the losses. The peso moved the other way, firming to about 974 per dollar, which means each dollar buys fewer pesos.
For US investors, a firmer peso softened the equity decline when measured in dollars.
What matters today. A selective pullback in lithium and retail, with a firmer peso, kept the day orderly.

01 The session in one read
The S&P IPSA closed at 10,926.50 on Tuesday, down 0.4%, according to Diario Financiero. On Monday it closed at about 10,972.
Declines centred on SQM-B, which fell more than 1%, and Mallplaza, which fell about 2.3%. We could not confirm moves in other individual stocks, so we leave them out.
The dollar fell to about 974 pesos, roughly 0.7% lower on the day, according to Chilean market reports.
Assessment — A selective pullback, not a rout LOW
The index fell less than half a per cent, and the peso firmed, so foreign selling does not look broad. The cause of the lithium and retail declines is not confirmed. What is not known is whether copper, Chile’s main export, moved on the day.
02 The day’s numbers
| Measure | Level | Change | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| S&P IPSA | 10,926.50 | −0.42% | Benchmark drifts lower |
| USD/CLP | about 974 | −0.7% | Peso strengthens against the dollar |
| Key technical level | 11,000 | — | Round number acts as near-term pivot |
The IPSA closed about 0.7% below the 11,000 mark. A close above that level would signal that Tuesday’s dip was a pause.
The dollar index fell about 0.3% to 101.7, so part of the peso’s strength reflects a broadly weaker US dollar.

The session read
The S&P IPSA eased 0.42%, with breadth negative — 2 of 11 names higher. Utilities led, while Consumer Staples lagged.
03 Why it moved — lithium and retail drags
The clearest pocket of weakness was lithium. SQM-B, one of the world’s largest lithium producers, fell more than 1% in Santiago.
Lithium shares are a barometer for electric-vehicle and battery demand. In New York, the SQM listing fell only 0.13%, a reminder that the two listings close at different times.
Retail was another soft corner. Mallplaza, which operates shopping centres, fell about 2.3%.
04 The day’s movers
| Driver | Level / Move | Change | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| SQM-B (lithium) | SQM-B | −1%+ | Lithium weakness weighs on index |
| Mallplaza (shopping centres) | MALLPLAZA | −2.3% | Retail drag |
These two moves are the ones we could confirm for Tuesday’s close. The IPSA’s other constituents are left out rather than guessed.
05 The regional scoreboard
| Index | Country | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Ibovespa | Brazil | +1.57% |
| S&P/BMV IPC | Mexico | +0.36% |
| S&P IPSA | Chile | −0.42% |
| COLCAP | Colombia | +0.47% |
| MSCI Merval | Argentina | −0.3% |
Brazil led Latin America with a 1.57% gain. Chile’s 0.42% decline was the region’s largest on the day.
06 The technical picture
The 11,000-point level is the immediate battleground for the IPSA. The index closed at 10,926.50, just below that psychological marker.
A sustained push above 11,000 would signal that Tuesday’s dip was a pause. A failure to reclaim it could invite further caution.
07 What to watch
- Copper: Chile’s main export remains the macro anchor for the peso and the index.
- SQM-B and lithium sentiment: The lithium producer’s drop shows sensitivity to battery-demand signals.
- The peso: Holding below 975 per dollar would extend the firmer trend.
- The 11,000 level: Whether the IPSA can reclaim it will set the tone for the week.
What Prediction Markets Say
Polymarket, a prediction market, prices the Central Bank of Chile’s October decision at no change 96.4%, a 25 basis point rise 2.1% and a 25 basis point cut 1.3%, with US$14,144 traded (8:36 pm ET, 20 October 2026). The market is thinly traded.
These are bets, not polls. Kalshi is a US exchange regulated by the CFTC.
Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.
