With the 2026 NBA Draft in the books, as well as the NBA and college seasons starting up, it is time to bring some attention to the upcoming 2027 NBA Draft. While this coming draft isn’t as talented as this past one, there are skilled prospects that teams can draft who have the potential to be significant pieces for that franchise. One of those prospects is Kansas Jayhawks forward Tyran Stokes, one of the presumed top-five prospects in the 2027 NBA Draft.
The six-foot-seven forward stands out as one of the few prospects in the 2027 draft who possesses star potential. He has an intriguing blend of size, athleticism, and skill that makes him an impactful player on both ends. He isn’t on the same level as Kansas’ star freshman from this past season, Darryn Peterson, but he does have the talent to make Kansas a significant threat and to become the top pick in the draft. Let’s dive into a preview of Stokes and what he brings to the table.
Previewing The 2027 NBA Draft’s Presumed Top Prospect: Tyran Stokes
Areas Of Excellence
Athleticism And Physical Tools
Standing at six-foot-seven with a seven-foot wingspan, Stokes stands out as an athletic wing who blends size, strength, and explosiveness to be one of the top prospects in the draft. For his size, he has great quickness and fluidity while on the move, allowing him to cover major ground on the court. Pairing that quickness with his athleticism makes Stokes capable of generating highlight plays. In fact, he knows how to utilize his athleticism and physical tools together to be an impactful player on both ends of the floor.
Impressive Rim Scoring Prowess
Even though he isn’t the same caliber of scorer as Peterson, who will spend his rookie year with the Utah Jazz, Stokes has shown himself to be an excellent scorer with major potential to expand his offensive game further. He operates best as a rim scorer who leverages his athleticism to get downhill and create rim pressure. Using that athleticism, he can blow right past opposing defenders to finish powerfully at the rim.
Not only that, but Stokes’ size and strength allow him to absorb and finish through significant contact when attacking the rim. Stokes also possesses excellent footwork when he is on his drives or operating in the post. His skill as a rim attacker is most apparent in transition, where he can fly down the floor for thunderous dunks.
While Stokes is the most effective as a scorer with the ball in his hands, he has shown positive flashes as an off-ball cutter. The very same qualities that make him a great slasher also assist him as a roller or cutter, providing him more utility as a scorer. He is good at reading when and where he needs to cut and make himself available for passes.

Strong Playmaking Flashes
Alongside his ability to score at the rim, Stokes has shown great flashes as a playmaker for his team. As a taller ball-handler, Stokes can use his size to see over the defense and find seams to make passing reads through. He also can leverage his gravity as a downhill driver to collapse defenses and generate open shots for his teammates. While he can be a bit careless with the ball, Stokes legitimately has solid court vision and passing ability that makes him even more of a threat out on the court.
Great Defensive Upside And Rebounding Feel
While much of the excitement around Stokes will focus on his offensive game, Stokes has significant potential as a defender and rebounder. His size and athleticism will help him be a versatile defensive piece who can guard multiple positions. He has the quickness to stay in front of guards and the strength to hang with bigger forwards. Stokes also uses his seven-foot wingspan well to be a great defensive playmaker, racking up blocks and steals with ease. That very same wingspan helps him be a strong rebounder for his position, especially on the defensive glass.
Areas Of Concern
Streaky Shooting
Perhaps the most obvious weakness in Stokes’ offensive game is that he isn’t the most consistent in terms of his shooting. While he has shown flashes of being able to space the floor, Stokes can be streaky from beyond the arc at times. Not only that, but Stokes is also inconsistent from the free-throw line. While Stokes can provide major value on the offensive end in other ways, improving his shooting will help elevate his ceiling.
There is reason to believe that Stokes can become a better shooter as he has shown upside with his mid-range touch and that he did shoot a respectable 36% from three this past year. If he can improve upon his shooting, especially from three, Stokes would immediately become a much bigger threat offensively than he already has shown.
Inconsistent Defensive Effort
Stokes is an incredibly talented prospect, but another aspect of his game that can use improvement is his commitment to the defensive end of the floor. He clearly has the tools to become a great defender on the floor, and Stokes has shown amazing flashes of that defensive potential. However, Stokes is still susceptible to becoming disengaged on the defensive end, demonstrating poor body language in the process. Stokes has everything he needs to be an impactful defender for any team that drafts him, but he must look to improve his motor and engagement on defense to fully reach his potential.
