Banking, payments, pensions, insurance, and digital lending are coming together at Access to meet more of Africans’ and African businesses’ financial needs, creating an integrated platform designed to support people through every stage of their economic lives. Kayode Tokede writes
The story of Access Bank is a story of deliberate reinvention. What began as a single commercial bank in Nigeria has become an integrated financial ecosystem spanning banking, payments, pensions, insurance, and digital lending across 25 countries and three continents, one of the most ambitious transformations in the history of African finance. This growth was not accidental; it was a deliberate strategy to build an institution capable of meeting the full range of financial needs of Africans and African businesses under one trusted roof.
The architecture is purposeful. Incorporated in 2021 and licensed in 2022, Access Holdings operates as a non-operating financial holding company anchoring five specialised subsidiaries: Access Bank, Hydrogen Payment Services, Access Pensions, Access Insurance Brokers and Oxygen X Finance. Each owns a distinct domain and is run by its own team with its own expertise, yet all are bound together by shared governance, technology and brand. Together they form a whole that is considerably greater than the sum of its parts.
The rationale is resilience through diversification. By spreading its value creation across banking, payments, pensions, insurance and consumer finance, the Group ensures its future does not rest on any single market, product or revenue stream, a vital hedge in Africa’s notoriously volatile economic cycles. When one business faces headwinds, others can carry the Group forward, giving it a stability and optionality that a single-line institution could never achieve. The structure is built as much for endurance as for growth.
The ecosystem creates integrated value for customers. A young African can open an account with Access Bank, transact through Hydrogen, borrow via Oxygen X, insure against risk through Access Insurance Brokers and save for retirement with Access Pensions, all within one trusted group and, increasingly, through connected digital channels. The Group can serve a whole financial life rather than a single transaction, accompanying customers as their needs evolve from first job to first business to eventual retirement.
The evolution mirrors a global shift but answers a distinctly African need. Around the world, finance is moving from standalone products toward integrated ecosystems and “super-app” models. In Africa, where many customers are entering formal finance for the first time and where trust is hard-won, a single trusted ecosystem lowers the barriers to doing more, sooner, letting a customer who begins with a savings account naturally progress to credit, insurance and long-term savings without having to start over with an unfamiliar provider.
Technology binds it together. Shared digital infrastructure lets the subsidiaries connect customers seamlessly across services, pass insight between business lines and deliver products efficiently at scale. The Group’s value creation draws on financial capital, technology, its people, its
partnerships and, above all, the trust it has earned across African markets over decades. Serving more than 60 million customers with over 31,000 employees, Access operates one of the largest and most capable financial franchises on the continent.
The financial foundation is substantial. With total assets of N51.56 trillion, gross revenue of N5.53 trillion and profit before tax of N1.01 trillion in 2025, the Group has the resources to keep investing in its ecosystem, building new capabilities, entering new markets and deepening the integration between its businesses. Scale of this kind is what allows a holding company to sustain five specialised subsidiaries and to fund the technology and talent that keep them competitive against focused challengers.
The direction of travel is towards ever deeper integration. As the subsidiaries connect more seamlessly, sharing data, channels and insight within the bounds of privacy and regulation, the ecosystem becomes more than a collection of businesses under one owner; it becomes a single, coordinated platform for financial life. For customers, that means simpler access to more of what they need, when they need it; for the Group, it means stronger relationships, richer insight and a durable advantage that focused, single-product competitors will find increasingly difficult to replicate as the platform matures. Ultimately, the goal is an institution so woven into the financial lives of Africans that it becomes the natural first choice at every stage, from a first savings account to a growing business, a pension and beyond, accompanying customers through decades of economic life within a single, trusted ecosystem.
Governance keeps the ecosystem coherent. Each subsidiary runs with its own board and executive team, close to its market and free to innovate, while remaining anchored in the Group’s overarching governance, risk and sustainability frameworks. This balance, local agility within group discipline, is what allows the ecosystem to be both responsive and safe. In assembling banking, payments, pensions, insurance and lending into a single coordinated platform, Access is building an ecosystem around Africa’s financial lives, designed to support people and businesses through every stage of their economic journey.
