As 11.4% of retail traffic moves through autonomous agents, a new strategy is emerging. Coined by Retailgentic's Scot Wingo, ACO is the succession plan for a world where agents make the decisions.
The era of chasing human eyeballs via search engine rankings is effectively over. For years, the digital economy was defined by the pursuit of visibility, but the infrastructure of commerce is undergoing a fundamental structural shift. We are moving away from a paradigm where humans navigate interfaces to one where autonomous agents execute decisions on our behalf.
This transition is captured by the emergence of Agentic Commerce Optimization (ACO), a term coined by Scot Wingo. As detailed in the Retailgentic ‘End of Q3 Vibe Check’, commerce is rapidly shifting toward an agent-dominant economy. ACO is not merely a new marketing tactic; it is the strategic successor to the search-based models that preceded it, marking the transition from optimizing for human intent to optimizing for machine-led decision-making.
The progression is clear: SEO focused on ranking for human-typed keywords. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) shifted the focus to influencing LLM-generated summaries. ACO represents the natural evolution where brands must re-engineer their data, APIs, and infrastructure to be inherently ‘readable’ and ‘actionable’ by autonomous agents. While SEO and GEO were concerned with discovery, ACO is concerned with the mechanics of execution.
To survive this transition, merchants must optimize across four distinct agentic surfaces: Answer Engines, which provide product research; Retailer Agents, such as Amazon Rufus, which manage inventory and purchasing; Personal Agents, which are user-owned assistants executing purchases; and the underlying Brand/Retailer Sites, which must now support robust agent-to-site API interactions. This is a departure from the fragmented checkout definitions discussed in recent industry discourse, moving toward a unified requirement for agent-merchant trust and intent verification.
The core of this shift is the move from visibility to transactional capability. In the SEO/GEO era, the goal was to be seen. In the ACO era, the goal is to be executable. This necessitates a move from ‘marketing to humans’ to ‘engineering for agents.’ Data transparency and API reliability are no longer optional technical debt; they are the primary drivers of conversion in an environment where the consumer is increasingly abstracted away from the point of sale.
Ultimately, ACO creates a new structural moat. Companies that fail to expose their commerce logic through reliable, agent-readable APIs will find themselves invisible to the next generation of autonomous purchasing agents. The competitive advantage no longer lies in how well you rank, but in how seamlessly your infrastructure integrates into the agentic workflow.
