Villarreal’s winless run against English clubs in the Champions League continued on Tuesday as they lost 4-3 to Liverpool in a seven-goal thriller at Anfield.
The Spanish side have played 17 matches against English opposition in the competition’s main stage, drawing six and losing 11. They have scored eight goals and conceded 26 across those games, with opponents including Manchester United, Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham.
Their record across all European competitions is better. In 26 matches against English clubs, Villarreal have won five, drawn nine and lost 12. Their most recent victory came in the 2020-21 Europa League semi-finals, when they beat Arsenal 2-1 in the first leg.
Other wins came against Liverpool in the 2015-16 Europa League semi-finals, Everton in the 2005-06 Champions League qualifying rounds and Middlesbrough in the 2004-05 UEFA Cup group stage.
Villarreal’s Champions League record
Villarreal first reached the Champions League in 2005-06, beating Everton in qualifying before finishing top of a group containing Benfica, Lille and Manchester United. They went on to reach the semi-finals, where they were eliminated by Arsenal.
The club have featured in six Champions League campaigns, reaching the semi-finals twice. Their second run to the last four came in 2021-22, when Liverpool knocked them out.
Villarreal’s overall record in the competition stands at 12 wins, 16 draws and 23 defeats from 56 matches. Before beating Napoli earlier in the current campaign, they had gone 12 games without a victory, losing seven in a row.
