LIMPOPO — North West businessman Suliman Carrim pressed ahead on Thursday with demands that his bail application be heard immediately, despite a packed court roll at the Musina Magistrate's Court leaving no obvious opening for the matter to proceed.
Carrim appeared in court on 22 October 2026 on charges related to an alleged attempt in July 2026 to move two Absa-financed vehicles from Mahikeng towards the Beitbridge border, reportedly destined for onward transport to Malawi.
Prosecutors allege the vehicles were accompanied by fraudulent documentation after legitimate bank authorisation from Absa was never secured. Two other suspects were reportedly arrested at the border in connection with the same alleged scheme.
Carrim invokes Constitutional right
When the magistrate and prosecutor suggested postponing the bail hearing to a more convenient date, Carrim and his legal representative objected.
They argued that it was his Constitutional right to bring a bail application at his first appearance and indicated they were prepared to wait for any available slot on the day's court roll.
The matter was subsequently stood down to allow the court to determine whether time could be created for the application to be heard before the close of proceedings.
