BBC News reports that the two, identified as Nazerul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar, were executed on Wednesday, October 14, according to Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Interior.
What happened to the Bangladeshi pair?
The ministry said the pair had been convicted of an immoral act inside a mosque, although its public statement did not specify precisely what happened.
Reports claim that the two had travelled to Saudi Arabia for Umrah and were allegedly involved in an incident in which the man kissed the woman's forehead after prayers.
According to these accounts, the alleged gesture attracted the attention of another individual, who reportedly recorded it before the matter was brought to the attention of security personnel.
However, the precise circumstances of the incident have not been fully established in the Saudi authorities' public statement.
Couple sentenced under discretionary law
The ministry said security authorities arrested the two, investigated the matter and referred the case to a competent court, which found them guilty and imposed death sentences.
Saudi authorities said the court imposed the death penalty under ta'zir, a form of discretionary punishment under Islamic law.
The ministry cited the gravity of the offence and the violation of the sanctity of the time and place in which it occurred.
It added that the verdict was upheld by the relevant judicial authority before a royal order was issued to implement the sentences.
Bangladesh raises questions over executions
The executions were carried out in the Makkah region on October 14, according to the ministry's announcement.
The official statement did not provide a detailed account of the evidence presented in court, the precise nature of the alleged act or the full chronology of the proceedings.
The case has raised concerns about consular assistance and whether Bangladesh's diplomatic mission was adequately informed about the proceedings against its citizens.
The Bangladesh Consulate General in Jeddah said it had not received advance notification of the executions and had formally sought acknowledgement and clarification from Saudi authorities.
A case that raises wider questions
The questions surrounding the case include what consular officials knew about the charges and sentences, whether the accused had adequate legal representation and interpretation services, and what opportunities were available to challenge the verdicts.
These issues are particularly significant when foreign nationals face criminal proceedings in a country whose language and legal system may be unfamiliar to them.
The executions have placed renewed attention on the rights of foreign nationals facing capital punishment, the transparency of criminal proceedings and the responsibilities of diplomatic missions towards citizens detained abroad.
For Bangladesh, the immediate questions concern the circumstances of the executions and why its diplomatic representatives say they were not notified beforehand.
For the families of Nazerul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar, the deaths mark a devastating outcome whose full circumstances remain to be clarified.
