Apple is positioning its artificial intelligence strategy around ordinary consumers rather than the small group of users obsessed with frontier models and superintelligence. Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice-president of worldwide marketing, made the distinction in an interview with TIME.
Joswiak said, “Apple welcomes die-hard AI believers chasing superintelligence, but they are not the company’s primary audience. We love them, and they can use it too, but that’s not our target. It’s how to make it better for everyday people.”
A Practical AI Bet
Apple’s message is clear: AI should solve routine problems without demanding technical expertise. The company wants Apple Intelligence to feel like a natural layer across its devices, helping users manage messages, reminders, calendars, photos and other daily tasks.
Joswiak also framed Apple’s approach as modest but useful. He argued that Apple is building a personalized and privacy-preserving form of AI that helps ordinary people, rather than creating technology designed mainly to impress Silicon Valley’s ‘lunatic fringe.’
Privacy Remains Central
Privacy remains a core part of Apple’s pitch. The company is emphasizing on-device processing and tight integration between hardware, software and services as it expands AI features across iPhones, Macs and other products.
That positioning separates Apple from competitors racing to showcase increasingly autonomous and powerful models. Instead of leading with raw model capability, Apple wants users to trust its AI because it works quietly within familiar products.
OpenAI Hardware Not a Threat
Joswiak also responded to OpenAI’s reported hardware ambitions. He said Apple does not feel threatened by the ChatGPT maker’s plans to enter the device market.
“We don’t feel threatened,” Joswiak said. He argued that Apple’s ability to integrate hardware, software and services allows it to deliver a better experience than rivals.
The comments suggest Apple sees its installed base, ecosystem control and privacy architecture as durable advantages. Apple must show that its consumer-first approach delivers visible improvements, especially as rivals continue to release more capable AI assistants and hardware.
