KUALA LUMPUR: Men's singles shuttler Cheam June Wei launched another bid for his maiden World Tour title by storming into the second round of the Malaysia Super 100 in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, today.
World No. 60 June Wei secured a 21-18, 21-15 victory over India's world No. 56 Rounak Chauhan in 37 minutes.
The victory extended June Wei's head-to-head record against Rounak to 3-0.
He plays China's second seed Dong Tian Yao tomorrow.
June Wei defeated world No. 39 Tian Yao en route to the semi-finals of the Super 300 Korea Masters in August and will be hoping to repeat that success on home soil.
Meanwhile, women's singles shuttler Eng Ler Qi showed grit and composure to clinch a 22-20, 19-21, 21-11 victory over Hong Kong's Saloni Samirbhai Mehta to reach the main draw.
"At first, I felt nervous and found it difficult to get used to the court conditions. I could not find my momentum, but I did not give up and kept trying," Ler Qi said.
"I just told myself not to rush, not to feel nervous about making mistakes, and to play my own game," she said.
She will face India's world No. 47 Malvika Bansod in the main draw tomorrow.
