The Imo state Police command has ordered an investigation into an incident at Emenike Hospital in Owerri, following allegations by former Super Eagles striker Emmanuel Emenike that police officers and officials linked to the state’s waste management agency invaded the facility, assaulted staff and patients, and arrested hospital workers.
The command also confirmed that three members of staff arrested during the operation on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, had been released. It said the investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding the arrests and determine the roles played by the officers involved. Blueprint reports
The development followed posts by Emenike on his verified social media account, in which he shared videos purportedly showing armed personnel in uniform arresting people at the hospital and called on the Imo state government, the Nigeria Police Force and relevant oversight authorities to investigate the incident.
The police response comes amid public questions about the circumstances surrounding the operation, including claims circulating online that it may be connected to the former footballer’s recent criticism of political leadership and alleged mismanagement of public funds. However, no verified evidence has established a link between his political comments and the incident.
Police order impartial investigation
In a statement issued on Thursday, October 22, 2026, the Imo state Police command said it was aware of CCTV footage circulating on social media showing officials of the Imo State Waste Management Agency and police officers at Emenike Hospital.
The command said the three hospital workers were arrested over alleged violations of the state’s waste management laws.
The Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, directed a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident, according to the statement signed by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Okoye Henry.
The police said any officer found to have acted unlawfully or engaged in misconduct would face appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with established procedures.
It also urged members of the public to remain calm, assuring them that the matter would be handled fairly and in line with the law.
The police statement provides an official explanation for the arrests, while leaving the investigation to establish whether the operation was properly conducted and whether any misconduct occurred.
Emenike alleges assault on staff and patients
In his social media posts, Emenike alleged that individuals said to be officials of the Imo State Waste Management Agency entered the hospital premises alongside armed police officers and disrupted activities at the facility.
He claimed that staff members and patients were assaulted and that the hospital administrator and cashier were taken away.
The former international footballer further alleged that the two employees were detained at Oji Police Station after being brutalised. The police, however, confirmed the release of three hospital workers and said an investigation had been ordered into the circumstances surrounding their arrest.
Emenike also alleged that the October incident was not the first confrontation involving security personnel at the facility.
According to him, a previous incident occurred on September 25, 2026, allegedly involving officers from Owerri Urban Division and Oji Police Station. He claimed the earlier operation was carried out on the orders of the Divisional Police Officer of Owerri Urban Division.
These allegations have yet to be independently established. The investigation is expected to clarify the sequence of events, the authority under which the operation was conducted and the roles of the individuals involved.
‘A hospital must be a place of care and safety’
Reacting to the incident, Emenike described the reported events as distressing, particularly because the facility was established to provide healthcare services to residents of his home state.
In a statement shared online, he said: “A HOSPITAL MUST BE A PLACE OF CARE AND SAFETY — NOT A SCENE OF VIOLENCE.”
He maintained that a healthcare facility should not become a place where patients feel threatened and medical workers fear for their safety.
Emenike called on the Imo State Government, the Nigeria Police Force and relevant oversight authorities to establish what happened and identify everyone involved.
He also demanded that anyone injured during the incident receive medical attention, witnesses be able to report their experiences safely, and available CCTV footage and other records be preserved for investigation.
The former striker called for appropriate action against any official or agency found to have acted unlawfully.
His concerns have drawn attention to the need to establish the circumstances of an enforcement operation conducted within a healthcare facility, where the safety of patients and the continuity of medical services are important considerations.
Controversy follows Emenike’s criticism of governance
The incident has also generated speculation online because it occurred days after Emenike publicly criticised aspects of governance in Nigeria.
The former footballer had expressed concern about alleged corruption, the management of public funds and the performance of political leaders. Some social media posts have suggested that the incident at his hospital could be connected to those remarks.
However, no evidence publicly established in the reports available so far confirms that the operation was ordered in retaliation for his criticism. The police have said the workers were arrested over alleged breaches of waste management laws and have ordered an investigation into the incident.
The distinction is important as the circumstances surrounding the hospital operation remain under examination. Establishing whether the operation was lawful, whether excessive force was used and whether any other considerations influenced the action will require evidence from the parties involved.
The police investigation could help clarify these questions and determine whether any officers should face disciplinary action.
Why Emenike built the hospital
Emenike said he established the hospital as a way of giving back to his community after a successful football career in Europe and with Nigeria’s national team.
The former striker was part of the Super Eagles squad that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, a major achievement in Nigerian football.
Reflecting on his decision to invest in Imo State, he said he wanted to create a place where residents could access medical care, find comfort and hold on to hope.
He described the hospital as an investment in his community and a demonstration of his commitment to the development of his home state.
Against that background, he said the reports of the October 21 incident were particularly painful because a facility intended to provide care had allegedly become a scene of fear and disruption.
Emenike called for protection and support for the hospital community, insisting that residents deserved safety and that healthcare facilities should remain places of care.
Investigation expected to clarify circumstances
The central issues now are the circumstances that led to the arrest of the hospital workers, the conduct of the officials involved and whether any rules or procedures were breached during the operation.
The police have confirmed that the three workers were released and that an investigation has been ordered. The command has also pledged disciplinary action against any officer found to have acted unlawfully.
While Emenike has alleged assault and misconduct, those claims remain subject to investigation. The allegations of a connection between the incident and his criticism of governance have also not been substantiated.
A transparent investigation, supported by available CCTV footage, incident records and accounts from witnesses, would help establish what happened and provide a clearer basis for any further action.
For now, the police probe is the principal official response to the controversy, while questions surrounding the alleged conduct of the officials and the circumstances of the arrests remain to be resolved.
