The Raiders owed themselves a better performance.
After the egg they laid against the Patriots last week, they delivered one Sunday, pushing the Bills to the limit before falling 33-30.
It was the Raiders third straight loss.
The response mattered. So did the resilience. Against a quarterback such as Josh Allen and an opponent capable of exposing every weakness, the Raiders competed, answered adversity and gave themselves a chance to win.
But the difference between making progress and finishing the job remains painfully clear.
The Raiders still cannot consistently run the ball. Their passing game too often requires a succession of precise, methodical plays rather than providing the explosive gains that make scoring easier. And when their margin for error is already that narrow, losing the turnover battle becomes even more difficult to overcome.
Kirk Cousins’ third-quarter interception contributed to that problem Sunday.
So did a defense that could not produce the stop the Raiders needed on Buffalo’s game-decising possession.
Allen’s 26-yard completion to running back James Cook helped set up the game-deciding touchdown, delivering another reminder of how quickly an explosive play can change a game.
And how much harder the Raiders must work to generate similar opportunities.
As the Raiders ensuing drive proved when they went three and out.
That was the difference between an encouraging response and a victory that would have given their progress considerably more weight.
There is something to build on here. The Raiders looked far more competitive and composed than they did against New England, and they refused to let that performance define their next one.
But effort and resilience cannot keep doing the work of a reliable running game, better ball security and timely defensive stops.
Sunday showed the Raiders can push a good team to the limit.
Taking the next step requires eliminating the mistakes and limitations that keep leaving them on the wrong side of games they have opportunities to win.
Big change doesn’t lead to big result
Klint Kubiak promised to consider changes to help get the Raiders’ running game going.
On Sunday, he followed through, replacing Jackson Powers-Johnson with Caleb Rogers at right guard.
The results reinforced something that should be increasingly apparent: Fixing this ground attack will require more than changing one name on the offensive line.
Even with Ashton Jeanty looking as healthy as he has all season, the Raiders again struggled to establish the consistent rushing production that is supposed to serve as the foundation of Kubiak’s offense.
Jeanty’s improved movement was encouraging. It also made the continued struggles more revealing. A healthier running back can only accomplish so much when the operation around him fails to consistently create opportunities.
The Raiders finished with 65 rushing yards on 25 attempts, with Jeanty accounting for 22 yards on 10 carries.
Whatever spark the Raiders hoped Rogers would provide, their problems followed them to the goal line.
After reaching Buffalo’s 2-yard line in the fourth quarter, the Raiders went backward on consecutive runs, losing a combined 3 yards. On second down, Rogers allowed defensive tackle Greg Gaines to break through and drop Jeanty for a 2-yard loss.
Cousins then threw incomplete to Cody White on third down, forcing the Raiders to settle for a field goal that cut Buffalo’s lead to 23-16.
A productive running game requires all five linemen, the tight ends and the other blockers to execute together. It requires timing between the blocking and the runner, and enough consistency to turn modest gains into manageable situations.
Changing the right guard was an attempt to improve that process. It was never going to erase every breakdown elsewhere.
The Raiders deserve credit for being willing to adjust rather than simply insisting improvement would arrive with more repetitions.
But willingness to change and meaningful progress are different things.
Sunday provided another reminder of the distance between them.
The Raiders need answers that show up in the running lanes and on the scoreboard. So far, those answers remain elusive.
The Raiders have been searching for someone to give their passing game more life beyond Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer, who combin3ed for 11 catches for 165 yards Sunday.
Tre Tucker offered an answer, although a little bit too late to make a difference.
Now comes the challenge of making it a consistent one.
Tucker caught two touchdown passes against the Bills, including a 44-yarder that pulled the Raiders within 33-30 and showed what this offense desperately needs from its wide receivers.
A quick strike. A chance to cover significant ground without having to execute a dozen plays. A reminder to opposing defenses that concentrating on the Raiders’ tight ends can come with consequences.
For an offense that too often has to move the ball in careful increments, Tucker’s ability to change the game with one catch is a valuable asset.
The Raiders need to make it a more regular part of their identity.
Bowers and Mayer remain dependable targets, but asking them to carry the passing game leaves the offense vulnerable to defenses that can limit their opportunities. Consistent production outside would create more options for Kirk Cousins and more difficult decisions for opponents.
Tucker has the speed to provide that dimension. Sunday, he turned that potential into points.
His two touchdowns were particularly meaningful given the Raiders’ continued struggles to establish a reliable running game. Without that foundation, they need other ways to create space, generate momentum and finish possessions in the end zone.
Tucker supplied one.
One afternoon does not settle every question about the receiving corps, and the Raiders still need more production throughout the group. But his performance offered a reason to keep looking his way and finding opportunities to put his speed to work.
The next step is turning those flashes into something the Raiders can count on.
Sunday showed how much different their offense can look when Tucker becomes part of the answer.
