BitGo has a new side project, and it is aimed squarely at the robots. The digital asset infrastructure company has launched BitGo Labs, an innovation unit that will initially focus on where artificial intelligence and crypto overlap.
The pitch is simple. BitGo says the AI economy needs crypto financial infrastructure, and it would very much like to be the one supplying it.
What BitGo Labs is building toward
BitGo Labs starts with a narrow mandate: applications that sit between AI systems and crypto rails. The unit’s founding thesis treats AI as a future user of financial services, not just a tool for the humans running them.
The Labs launch does not arrive in a vacuum. BitGo has spent 2026 shipping AI-facing products, and the new unit looks like a formal home for that work.
On March 23, 2026, the company unveiled its Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server. The tool lets AI clients such as Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and VS Code query BitGo’s Developer Portal using plain language.
Put more simply, a developer can ask an AI assistant how to handle wallet management, staking or integration on BitGo, and get answers pulled from BitGo’s own documentation.
CEO Mike Belshe described the MCP Server as only the first phase of opening BitGo’s platform to the AI economy. BitGo Labs reads as the next phase of that same plan.
Guardrails come standard
The second product followed on August 12, 2026. BitGo Assist is an embedded search tool built for institutional users, letting them interact with the platform through natural-language questions.
There is one notable limit. No financial transactions can be executed or approved through the AI interface.
BitGo is also using AI internally. The company reports that 20-40% of its recent code generation is assisted by AI tools, while maintaining strict human oversight of that output.
From 2013 startup to chartered bank
BitGo was founded in 2013 and now operates as a federally chartered digital asset bank.
The company has also been publicly traded on the NYSE under the ticker BTGO since January 2026.
BitGo’s core business still revolves around custody, staking and trading. The AI products so far have been built to make those services easier to access and use, rather than to replace them.
What this means for institutions and the AI-agent trade
Both the MCP Server and BitGo Assist focus on information and access, and BitGo Assist explicitly blocks transaction execution and approval.
For now, BitGo has drawn a clear line. AI can help you find the answer, write the integration code and navigate the platform, while the final approval on moving assets stays with people.
