President Bola Tinubu has congratulated veteran journalist and former Managing Director of The Guardian Newspaper, Oyinlade “Ladbone” Bonuola, on his 80th birthday, praising his contributions to Nigerian journalism and the development of the media industry.
In a statement issued by the State House on Sunday, October 25, 2026, Tinubu described Bonuola as one of Nigeria’s most respected journalists, commending his editorial courage, integrity, professionalism and commitment to truth.
The President said Bonuola’s decades of service had helped shape media reporting, promote responsible journalism and strengthen the press as a pillar of democracy.
“Recognised by media peers and mentees as a craftsman par excellence, Bonuola began his career at the Daily Times in February 1971 as a trainee sub-editor, rose through the ranks, and joined The Guardian in 1982 as pioneer editor, later serving as Managing Director till 1999,” the statement said.
Tinubu noted that Bonuola later co-founded the defunct Comet newspaper, where he served as managing director, and also headed Nigerian Compass as managing director.
The President recalled Bonuola’s weekly column, *Caught Out*, at the Daily Times, describing it as a must-read for practising journalists, students and members of the public.
He also highlighted Bonuola’s leadership at The Guardian and his role in establishing The Comet, which later became The Nation newspaper.
