The Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, described the geometric progress of the Media Trust Group through its investment in journalism, newsroom innovation and media diversification as “jinx broken” in Northern Nigeria.
He explained that the organisation has made the government proud through its contributions to the Nigerian economy. Barau Jibrin, who was the special guest of honour at the event, hailed the media organisation for embracing technology and adapting its operations to changing trends in the industry.
He described the organisation as a trailblazer, citing its transition from a weekly publication to a daily newspaper and its subsequent expansion into television, radio and digital platforms.
“Before I came in, I told the chairman that this outfit is a game-changer. You have broken the jinx,” he said.
According to Barau, Media Trust’s willingness to take risks, innovate and diversify its operations offers valuable lessons for other media organisations and businesses seeking to remain competitive.
He said the launch of the digital newsroom demonstrated the organisation’s commitment to modernising its operations and keeping pace with technological developments, including artificial intelligence.
He also highlighted Media Trust’s contributions to the economy through employment generation, increased business activity and tax payments.
“You are not only helping your enterprise, but you are helping the entire economy. Because you are growing. As you grow, you are contributing to the economy,” he said.
He said Media Trust’s achievements showed that media businesses could combine professional journalism with sound entrepreneurship and effective management.
Barau also cited his own investment in technology education as an example of the importance of anticipating future trends.
The politician recalled sponsoring about 200 students to study artificial intelligence and robotics at universities abroad approximately two years ago, saying the students had completed their studies and were expected to return to Nigeria.
He expressed optimism that their expertise could contribute to the country’s technological development and potentially benefit organisations such as Media Trust.
Barau congratulated the management and staff of Media Trust on the launch, saying the Senate recognised and appreciated the organisation’s efforts to improve its operations and advance journalism in Nigeria.
“I congratulate you, and I commend you on behalf of the legislature,” he said.
