Shillong, Oct 19: Residents of East Khasi Hills seeking to register births or deaths more than two years after the event must now obtain an order from a Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), following changes under the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act, 2026.
The District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills has issued a public notice informing residents about the revised procedure.
Under the amended Section 13 of the Act, Judicial Magistrates First Class have exclusive authority to issue orders for registering births or deaths reported more than two years after their occurrence. Executive Magistrates are no longer authorised to issue such orders.
The new procedure applies to both fresh and pending applications. Applicants must approach the competent JMFC court directly for registrations delayed beyond two years.
The notification takes immediate effect across East Khasi Hills District, in line with the enforcement of the amended central legislation.

The district administration has urged residents to follow the revised judicial procedure to avoid delays or rejection of applications.
