While it is almost impossible for one not to express some level of jealousy over someone they are in a romantic relationship or marriage with, it is important that such a feeling is controlled. OLUWATOBILOBA OREYEMI and FATIMA BAZAMBO sampled the opinions of some people to enquire whether, in a romantic relationship or marriage, jealousy is a sign of love, insecurity, or both. Their views:

Jealousy is not proof of love. In marriage or courtship, trust is the foundation of a successful relationship. A little jealousy can come from caring deeply about someone and being afraid of losing them. However, it becomes unhealthy when it leads to controlling your partner. Love is about valuing someone and protecting the relationship, while insecurity comes from the fear of losing someone and wanting to control what they do. So, jealousy can be both a sign of love and insecurity. But at the end of the day, love should build trust between partners.

In marriage, jealousy is more about insecurity than love. At the beginning, a little jealousy may feel like love because you do not want to lose someone you care about. But when you are married, you have already chosen each other, so there should be trust between you. When jealousy becomes too much, it may mean that one partner does not trust the other or is afraid of losing them to someone else. It is normal to feel jealous sometimes, provided you can talk about it calmly and still respect your partner. At the end of the day, love should make your partner feel safe and trusted, not trapped or controlled.

The difference lies in why someone feels jealous and how they handle it. Jealousy can come from genuinely loving someone, valuing the relationship, and being afraid of losing what you share. On the other hand, jealousy can also come from fear, low self-esteem, past betrayal, or a lack of trust. This type of jealousy is less about love and more about insecurity or the need to control a partner. Jealousy can also be a combination of both. The feelings may be real, but they still have a responsibility to manage their emotions healthily. Love does not automatically remove insecurity, and insecurity does not necessarily mean the love is not genuine.

Jealousy is not a sign of love but insecurity. When it becomes too much, it can make the other partner uncomfortable and create unnecessary problems in the relationship or marriage. When you truly love someone, you should be able to trust them without always suspecting them or trying to control their actions. Although it is normal to feel jealous sometimes, how you handle it matters a lot. Excessive jealousy can hurt your partner emotionally and destroy the peace in the relationship.
Victor Alebiosu
A little jealousy can be normal in a relationship or marriage because it shows that you value your partner and are afraid of losing them. However, there is a difference between caring for someone and trying to control them. When jealousy leads to checking your partner’s phone, getting angry over harmless conversations with others, controlling how they dress or constantly suspecting them without evidence, it becomes unhealthy. Most times, this kind of jealousy comes from insecurity, fear of being abandoned or past experiences that have not been properly dealt with. Love can be the reason you are afraid of losing someone, while insecurity determines how you react to that fear. A little jealousy is human, but when it becomes constant, it needs to be addressed. Instead of trying to control your partner, it is better to understand what is causing the fear and communicate openly. Love should make you feel safe, not monitored or controlled.

Jealousy can be a sign of love and insecurity. It depends on how you express it. When you see your partner with somebody you do not like, you become jealous, but the way you express it would determine if it is love or insecurity. If you express it calmly, it is a sign of love, but if you express it aggressively, it is a sign of insecurities.

It all depends on the situation and how the person handles it. When you genuinely love someone, it is normal to feel a little jealous sometimes. You may feel uncomfortable when someone else gets too close to your partner, not necessarily because you do not trust them, but because you value the relationship and do not want to lose what you have with them. Insecurity plays a major role in jealousy. Sometimes, people become jealous because they are afraid they are not good enough for their partners or because they have been hurt or betrayed in previous relationships. Instead of dealing with those fears, they allow them to affect their current relationship. Love alone is not enough to sustain a healthy relationship; trust, understanding, and emotional maturity are equally important. You can love someone deeply and still be jealous.
Adebisi Adewunmi
Jealousy can be a sign of love but not proof that someone loves you. Sometimes, it can come from love and sometimes, from insecurity. In many cases, it can be both. When you genuinely care about someone, it is normal to feel a little jealous when you think of losing them. Jealousy can sometimes be a combination of love and insecurity. You can genuinely love someone and still have insecurities. Loving someone doesn’t automatically make you emotionally secure. Healthy love should give you enough security to say, “I feel jealous, but I know this feeling belongs to me, and I do not have to punish you for it.”
Basambo Abdulbaki
Jealousy is both a sign of love and a sign of insecurity, and what decides which one it is, is how a person handles it. On one hand, a little jealousy can come from love. When you care deeply about someone, you naturally do not want to lose them or share their attention with others. On the other hand, jealousy often comes from insecurity. It can come from fear of not being good enough, fear of being replaced, or hurt from past relationships. In that case, it says more about what is going on inside the jealous person than about what their partner has done. The difference is in the behaviour. Love can start the feeling, but insecurity decides how loudly it shows. What really makes a relationship last is trust, honest communication, and security in each other.
Yusuf Olatunji
Jealousy can be a sign of love, but it does not prove that someone loves you. It often arises when a person fears losing someone they care about, love, and value deeply. In small doses, it can show that the person matters to them and that they are paying attention to the relationship. However, jealousy can also come from insecurity, fear of abandonment, lack of trust and obsessiveness. In this case, it has little to do with how much the person loves you and more to do with their own fears and past hurts. What matters most is how jealousy is handled. When it is expressed honestly and calmly, it can bring couples closer.
Daniel Shadrack
Jealousy can affect any marriage when it becomes too much. It can lead to insecurity and overreacting to things that couples can easily talk about and solve through communication. It is normal to feel jealous sometimes because you value, cherish, and love what you have. But too much jealousy can cause problems and even destroy a happy marriage. At the end of the day, love is not just about being afraid of losing your partner; it is also about trusting them, understanding each other, and knowing how to handle issues without letting jealousy ruin what you have built together.
Pere Izon
Love may make you afraid of losing someone you cherish, while insecurity can make you feel the need to control that person. Even when jealousy comes from love, it should never be used as an excuse for possessiveness, manipulation, or restricting your partner’s freedom. Loving someone does not mean owning them. It means respecting their individuality and building a relationship based on trust, understanding and mutual respect. When jealousy comes from constant suspicion and fear, it can damage the relationship, but when it is expressed as genuine concern and balanced with trust, it may reflect how much someone values their partner. Ultimately, what matters is the reason behind the jealousy, how it is handled and the effect it has on the relationship. The wisdom lies in knowing the difference.
