Giannis Papasifakis, a Cretan shepherd with more than 100,000 social media followers, is featured in a BBC The Travel Show episode titled “Guardians of Crete.”
He continues a family livestock tradition, living for months each year in a mitato at around 1,800 metres in the White Mountains above Anopoli, Sfakia, southern Crete.
His days involve herding sheep, making cheese, and remote mountain life, with supplies carried by mules and power from solar panels. He regularly posts photos and videos, sometimes drawing up to 1,200 live viewers while eating.
The BBC segment highlights this centuries-old shepherding way of life away from Crete’s beaches.
