Ethiopia warns Eritrea of severe consequences if it keeps ignoring calls for partnership, Ethiopian media reported on 19 and 20 October 2026. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed made the remarks in a Tigrinya-language interview with the state broadcaster EBC.
For US readers, a war beside the Red Sea would threaten Suez Canal shipping and the main US base in Africa, in Djibouti. The warning matters because Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged Ethiopia to show restraint days ago.
What Abiy Said as Ethiopia Warns Eritrea
Abiy said Eritrea has lost much of its industry and city life since it split from Ethiopia, the Ethiopian News Agency reported on 20 October. It once had more than 300 factories, he said, and Asmara, its capital, is now smaller than the Ethiopian towns of Arba Minch and Jigjiga.
On the Red Sea ports he said: “Massawa has been emptied, while Assab has been reduced to a ghost town.” He blamed Eritrea’s government for neglecting development and for serving the interests of Ethiopia’s enemies.
Fana Media Corporation, an Ethiopian broadcaster, reported on 19 October that Abiy called the danger extremely severe. Those who egg Eritrea on, he said, can do no more than hand it bullets.
Why Ethiopia Warns Eritrea Over Two Ports
Ethiopia has had no coastline since Eritrea became independent in 1993, so it ships most of its trade through Djibouti. That is why Ethiopia warns Eritrea over ports, and Assab sits close to the Bab el-Mandeb strait, the gateway to the Suez Canal.
On 14 October Eritrea told UN Security Council members that Ethiopia seeks sea access by force if necessary (our report). Eritrea says Ethiopia expelled all ten of its diplomats in Addis Ababa on 1 October.
Eritrea’s foreign ministry research division set out its case in a paper on Shabait, the government news site, dated 20 October. It calls Ethiopia’s push for sea access an expansionist project that threatens Eritrea’s sovereignty and borders.

What Washington Has Said
Rubio told reporters, “You see troops surging on both sides of the border,” The Reporter in Addis Ababa wrote on 18 October. He said he had spoken with Abiy earlier in the week and urged Ethiopia to exercise restraint.
Ethiopian federal troops reached the border town of Zalambessa by 13 October, as covered in Ethiopian Troops Reach Zalambessa by 13 Oct. As Ethiopia warns Eritrea, the two armies stand close together near the Red Sea.
What Prediction Markets Say
Polymarket, a US platform for real-money bets, gives 16.5% odds of an Eritrean invasion by 31 December and 2.6% by 31 October. The October bet fell 7.0 points in 24 hours and stood at 18.5% on 15 October (21 October 2026, 3:13 a.m. ET).
The two bets on whether Ethiopia warns Eritrea in vain have drawn US$58,746 and US$54,540 in volume, US$113,286 in all. A separate Polymarket bet puts the chance of Abiy leaving office in 2026 at 4.6%, with US$13,090 in volume.
Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.
What It Means for US Readers
A clash on the Red Sea coast could disrupt Bab el-Mandeb shipping and press on Camp Lemonnier, the main US base in Africa, in Djibouti. Our report Djibouti Faces 2 Wars as Egypt Weighs Troops sets out that squeeze.
The State Department rates Ethiopia Level 3, Reconsider Travel, and says not to travel to Tigray or the Eritrean border area. It rates Eritrea Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, and warns that US citizens have been detained without charge.
What Is Not Known
Eritrea’s government has not published a reply to the interview, and it is open whether it will accept talks. When Ethiopia warns Eritrea, Abiy gives no deadline and does not say what severe consequences means.
The factory count and the city comparisons are Abiy’s own, and Eritrea publishes no matching figures. Whether the warning leads to fighting between the two national armies is also open.
