What We Know
Brother Valentino, whose real name was Emrold Anthony Phillip, has died aged 85, according to reports on 21 October 2026. The Trinidad Guardian, CNC3 and TTT News all carried the news.
He was born on 7 July 1941 in Cherry Hill, Grenada. The Ministry of Culture and Community Development says he moved to Trinidad and Tobago as a child.
Michelle Benjamin, the Minister of Culture and Community Development, paid tribute in that statement. She said: “Brother Valentino was more than a Calypsonian; he was a voice for the voiceless, a conscience for the nation and a keeper of our stories.”
The Trinbago Unified Calypsonians’ Organisation (TUCO) said the calypso fraternity mourned his passing. It described his voice as an expression of “generations’ struggles, hopes and experiences”, and said his legacy remains part of the country’s cultural heritage.
The reports give a consistent outline of his life and career. Details beyond the official statements were not available at the time of writing.
Who He Was in Plain English
In Plain English
Calypso is a song form from Trinidad that tells stories and comments on society. It is the root of Carnival music, the soundtrack of Trinidad’s biggest annual festival.
A calypsonian is a calypso singer and songwriter. The ministry called Brother Valentino a voice for the voiceless.
TUCO is the calypsonians’ organisation that issued a tribute. Its name stands for the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians’ Organisation.
His Music and Honours
He began performing in the early 1960s, inspired by Mighty Sparrow. At an audition, Lord Kitchener gave him the stage name Brother Valentino.
His songs included “No Revolution” (1971), “Life Is a Stage” and “Stay Up Zimbabwe” (1979). Others were “Ah Wo (Brand New Revolution)” (1980), “Where Kaiso Went”, “Dis Place Nice” and “Barking Dogs”.
In 1975 he staged a sold-out solo production. He also appeared with Black Stalin in “Blood Brothers” and performed in the United States.
He was a founding member of Kaiso House. He never won the national Calypso Monarch crown, but he took the Veterans Calypso Monarch title in 2005.
He preferred the title “The People’s Calypsonian”, which he regarded as a greater honour than a national crown. His honours included the Sunshine Awards Hall of Fame in 2009 and the Hummingbird Medal Gold in 2012.
He was also recognised for 50 years as a performer. His death comes weeks after that of Mighty Sparrow, whose passing at 91 we reported earlier.
What Is Not Known
The cause and place of death have not been disclosed. The Guardian and CNC3 say he died on 20 October, while the ministry statement points to 21 October, so we report only that the news emerged on 21 October.
Family details and funeral plans have not been disclosed either. We have seen no official notice on these points, and we will not guess.
What It Means for Readers Abroad
For Trinidadian and Grenadian families abroad, the news marks the loss of a well-known voice. He also performed in the United States, so some listeners there may know his work.
Fans of Caribbean music can start with the songs named above. They offer a way into the repertoire behind the tributes now being paid.
Readers who want to follow the story should watch for statements from the ministry and TUCO. These are the two official bodies that have spoken so far.
The death comes during Calypso History Month 2026, and Trinidad Carnival 2027 falls in February. More coverage is on our Trinidad and Tobago page.
