KUALA LUMPUR: Sunway Group is setting its sights on a new era of mobility in Malaysia, unveiling plans to work with three international technology leaders, namely WeRide, Neolix and AutoFlight, to pioneer autonomous passenger transport, driverless logistics and electric aviation, with potential applications across its integrated townships and businesses.
The announcement was made by Sunway Group president Datuk Anuar Taib at Transport Expo Asia (TXA) 2026, a regional platform hosted by the Transport Ministry (MoT) that brings together policymakers, industry leaders and technology innovators to advance the future of transportation, mobility and logistics.
Central to Sunway’s plans is the proposed acquisition and trial of two fully electric autonomous buses from WeRide on the BRT-Sunway Line, which has received conditional approval from MoT for a pilot trial.
The initiative could pave the way for autonomous shuttle services across Sunway’s integrated townships, potentially enabling more frequent services, extended operating hours and greater convenience for commuters, particularly those travelling early in the morning or late at night.
Sunway also intends to partner with Neolix to distribute its autonomous logistics vehicles in Malaysia.
The driverless vehicles could be deployed for last-mile deliveries and the transportation of goods and medical supplies between facilities, opening new possibilities for businesses to improve operational efficiency and connectivity.
In another potentially transformative development in future mobility, Sunway is exploring the acquisition and trial of an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft from AutoFlight, alongside a possible arrangement to distribute its aircraft in Malaysia.
Working closely with the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia, Sunway intends to unlock new possibilities in aerial logistics, emergency response and, eventually, passenger transportation, subject to technical feasibility and regulatory approvals.
The proposed collaborations will draw on the collective strengths of Sunway’s integrated ecosystem, spanning 13 business divisions including property development, construction, healthcare, retail, hospitality and leisure, among others.
This diversified ecosystem provides Sunway with a distinctive platform to explore, test and potentially deploy emerging mobility technologies across a broad range of real-world applications, from moving commuters within its townships and transporting goods between commercial facilities to supporting healthcare logistics and emergency services.
Anuar said the initiatives reflect Sunway’s ambition to harness technological innovation to enhance the quality of life in its communities while positioning Malaysia to participate in the next wave of transportation and mobility innovation.
Beyond their potential commercial applications, the collaborations are also expected to create opportunities for technology transfer, talent development and greater participation by Malaysian businesses in emerging industries.
As Sunway looks towards its next 50 years, the group sees autonomous mobility, intelligent logistics and electric aviation as technologies with the potential to fundamentally transform how people and goods move within cities and beyond.
