Siemens and Nvidia have signed an agreement to jointly develop an industrial artificial-intelligence operating system. The goal is software that can run a factory the way an operating system runs a laptop.
What the two companies are building
The deal expands an existing strategic partnership. Siemens contributes its industrial automation and digital twin technology. Nvidia brings its AI infrastructure and computing tools.
The companies plan to use digital twins and simulation to optimize both manufacturing processes and supply chains. Factories could test changes in software first, then roll out only the versions that actually work.
The initiative was unveiled on January 6, 2026, at CES in Las Vegas. Siemens CEO Roland Busch and Nvidia founder and CEO Jensen Huang presented the expanded partnership together.
The partnership also targets AI-native electronic design and faster simulation tools, which would let engineers design products with AI baked in from the start rather than bolted on later.
The Erlangen test case
Siemens has invested $560 million in the Erlangen site. According to the research findings, by October 2026 the facility had begun using around 100 AI agents across various production-related tasks.
The reported results are substantial. Here is what Siemens’ Erlangen deployment has produced:
- An 85% reduction in engineering effort for virtual production ramp-ups
- 20% cost savings through AI-driven planning
- A 40% faster time-to-market for new circuit boards
- Roughly 7% annual productivity gains
The site uses what has been described as an “AI Brain” to validate changes before they are physically implemented. In practice, that means proposed adjustments get stress-tested virtually before anyone rearranges equipment.
Erlangen has now been designated as a global blueprint for AI-driven adaptive manufacturing. It is meant to serve as a prototype for future AI-powered plants around the world, with the longer-term aim of fully autonomous and adaptive production environments.
What this means for manufacturers and markets
For manufacturers, Erlangen is effectively a public demo with real numbers attached. A 40% faster time-to-market on circuit boards is a competitive edge in an industry where product cycles keep shrinking.
That caveat matters. Erlangen is a Siemens plant running Siemens technology with Nvidia hardware, under heavy corporate attention. Results in a flagship factory do not always translate cleanly to older plants with mixed equipment from many vendors and less engineering support.
The key things to watch next are concrete rollouts. Specifically: how many external manufacturers adopt the system, whether the Erlangen efficiency figures are replicated at other sites, and how quickly the AI-native electronic design work moves from ambition to product.
