The Chicago Bears improved to 4-2 on Sunday with a 31-23 road win over the Atlanta Falcons, and there were plenty of Bears fans in the stands at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. But not all of them made a great impression.
During a scary moment in the third quarter, as Falcons rookie linebacker Kendal Daniels was being immobilized and taken off the field on a stretcher, a group of Bears fans broke out into a “Green Bay sucks” chant that was caught on camera by a member of the media.
Needless to say, a lot of people weren’t happy about the timing.
Kendal Daniels Injury
Daniels was injured midway through the third quarter while making a tackle on Bears tight end Colston Loveland, as his head appeared to collide with Loveland’s leg. Trainers and medical personnel quickly rushed onto the field.
The fourth-round pick out of Oklahoma State had his neck and body stabilized before he was loaded onto a cart. The entire Falcons sideline came onto the field to support him.’
As Daniels was being attended to, the chant broke out inside the stadium, as captured in a clip shared by Easton Butler of Packer Report. Even some Bears players didn’t approve.
“Entire Atlanta bench has emptied on the field as trainers are efforting getting Kendal Daniels on the cart. Bears players are telling fans chanting ‘Green Bay sucks’ to stop doing that,” wrote Courtney Cronin of ESPN.
‘Not Right Time & Place’
Needless to say, the chant drew plenty of criticism, including from Chicago media members.
“‘Green Bay sucks’ chants breaking out as #Falcons LB Kendal Daniels is immobilized on stretcher. Maybe not right time & place?” wrote Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.
“Green Bay sucks chants in ATL as Kendal Daniels gets placed on the board and carted off. [Freaking] clowns. GB whooped that [expletive] just a week ago,” wrote Matt Abbatacola of 312 Sports.
“This is gross dude. And if Packers fans did it, I would say the same thing. Don’t do this [stuff],” wrote Peter Bukowski, host of Locked On Packers.
“Self awareness is key in life,” wrote former NBA player Sam Dekker.
“Quite literally the worst collection of people in professional sports that you will ever meet,” wrote Zach Jacobson of Packer Dispatch.
Atlanta was able to share some good news on Daniels’ condition, however.
“Kendal Daniels is alert and has movement in all his extremities. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for further evaluation,” the Falcons announced.
