A book bought for just £1 at a UK car boot sale turned out to be a rare first edition of Casino Royale, the 1953 novel that introduced readers to James Bond. The copy, which retained its original dust jacket, eventually sold for £10,000 at auction, turning an ordinary second-hand purchase into a remarkable discovery.
According to the Antiques Trade Gazette, the buyer had picked up the book while visiting family in Yorkshire around 10 years before the auction. The story highlights how overlooked books can command substantial sums when their edition, condition and publishing history make them desirable to collectors.
A forgotten purchase revealed a rare find
The buyer, a woman from Torquay, purchased the book while visiting family in Yorkshire. She was not a book collector and did not initially recognise the significance of the title.
What caught her attention was the pink hearts on the cover. The book subsequently remained inside a box for years. When she eventually began clearing out her belongings, she came across the old purchase and searched for its title online. Realising it could be valuable, she contacted Chris Surfleet of auction house Adam Partridge, who identified it as a clean first edition with its original dust jacket. The auction house announced the discovery on June 11, 2024, estimating that the book could fetch between £10,000 and £15,000.
It was scheduled to go under the hammer at the Devon saleroom on June 24.
Why the original dust jacket mattered
The book's value lay in more than its age. Casino Royale was published by Jonathan Cape in 1953 and introduced Ian Fleming's fictional British secret agent, James Bond, also known as 007. The novel follows Bond on a mission involving a high-stakes baccarat game against Le Chiffre, an agent working for the Soviet intelligence service. The auctioned copy was a first edition, first impression, retaining its original dust jacket.
According to the Antiques Trade Gazette, the absence of a Times review on the front flap helped identify the dust jacket as a first-state version used on early copies. Although the jacket had a few minor tears, its survival added to the book's appeal. It also retained the original price of 10 shillings and sixpence on both the front and rear flaps.
According to Adam Partridge, the 1953 edition was one of only 4,750 copies printed.
From a £1 bargain to a £10,000 auction sale
The book went under the hammer at Adam Partridge's Devon saleroom on June 24, 2024. It sold for £10,000, the lower end of its estimated range of £10,000 to £15,000. The amount was the hammer price, before the buyer's premium. The successful bidder was a UK buyer who specialised in collecting rare Ian Fleming editions and participated by telephone, Antiques Trade Gazette reported. The sale also illustrated how condition can influence the value of a collectible.
Although the original dust jacket survived, its minor tears may have prevented the book from fetching a higher price, auctioneer Chris Surfleet told the Antiques Trade Gazette. Comparable first editions had previously sold for £10,000 and £17,000 at Forum Auctions, while a particularly fine copy fetched £22,500 in 2017.For the woman who bought it without knowing its significance, the book had remained an ordinary second-hand purchase for years. Its eventual sale demonstrated how a modest find can become a sought-after collectible when rarity, condition and publishing history come together.
