JUBA — The Interim Political Bureau of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO) has announced its full readiness to contest all elective seats across the country in the upcoming general elections.
During its first extraordinary meeting held on October 18, 2026, and chaired by Interim Chairman Amb. Stephen Par Kuol, the Political Bureau reviewed ongoing party restructuring efforts, inter-party dialogue, and preparations for the electoral cycle.
Among its core resolutions, the party established an ad-hoc committee dedicated to promoting political engagement and consultations with other political parties and peace partners on matters of national concern.
Opposition Slams Presidential Travel Restrictions
The meeting addressed grave concerns regarding Republican Order No. 36-10/2026, issued on October 15, 2026, which restricts the travel of former officials who reverted to ordinary citizen status following their relief from office.
The SPLM-IO leadership condemned the order, warning that it constitutes a direct infringement on freedom of movement as enshrined in the Transitional Constitution of South Sudan, 2011 (as amended). The party emphasized that travel restrictions during an active election season severely undermine democratic competition by hindering candidates and former officials from engaging with citizens and conducting legitimate campaign activities.
Concluding the session, the Political Bureau called upon all party members and supporters to remain united and focused on institutional reorganization while reaffirming its commitment to peaceful dialogue, democratic participation, and the safeguarding of citizens’ constitutional rights.
