Real Madrid produced a stunning late comeback to beat Roma 4-3 in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, scoring three goals in the final eight minutes after trailing 3-1.
Roma looked set for victory at the Stadio Olimpico after Donyell Malen scored twice to put the hosts 3-1 ahead. However, Real Madrid fought back in dramatic fashion to snatch all three points.
Marten de Roon opened the scoring for Roma in the 20th minute, before Kylian Mbappé equalised for Real Madrid five minutes later.
Malen restored Roma’s lead in the 51st minute and struck again six minutes later, with the hosts taking control of the encounter.
Real Madrid, however, refused to surrender. Substitute Carlos Espí pulled one back in the 83rd minute, giving the visitors renewed hope of salvaging a result.
Another substitute, Endrick, levelled the scores two minutes later, completing a remarkable recovery that left Roma struggling to contain the visitors.
Antonio Rüdiger then delivered the decisive blow in the 90th minute, converting from close range to complete Real Madrid’s comeback and secure a memorable 4-3 victory.
The result made José Mourinho’s return to the Stadio Olimpico particularly dramatic. The Portuguese manager previously led Roma to the Europa Conference League title in 2021-22 and guided the club to the Europa League final the following season.
Roma supporters welcomed their former manager with banners celebrating his time at the club, but the home side could not prevent his current team from leaving with a remarkable victory.
Mbappé’s goal was another milestone for the French forward, taking his Champions League tally to 72 goals in 100 appearances and moving him clear of Real Madrid legend Raúl, who scored 71 in the competition.
