Deputy Education Minister Dr Clement Apaak has clarified that an earlier incident involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) concerned allegations of a fetus burial on the school premises, not sexual abuse.
Speaking on JoyNews’ News Night on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Dr Apaak said the incident, which reportedly led to students assaulting the headmaster, was separate from the sexual abuse allegations that have since emerged.
“It is important to indicate that while there is a report about an incident in the same school involving the same headmaster, that report was in relation to allegations of the burial of a fetus, which was said to have generated a reaction from a section of the students, leading to an assault on this very same headmaster,” he said.
“Now, that has nothing to do with any complaint with regards to sexual abuse, as was revealed to us in Manasseh Azure’s documentary. It is important to put things in proper perspective,” he added.
According to Dr Apaak, the earlier incident followed allegations that a fetus had been buried on the school premises, prompting a reaction from some students and an assault on the headmaster.
He stressed that the incident should not be conflated with the separate sexual abuse allegations that have since drawn public attention.
The clarification comes amid scrutiny of the handling of allegations against the school’s suspended headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai.
An investigative documentary by journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni detailed allegations of sexual abuse involving as many as 19 female students.
The Ghana Education Service has suspended the headmaster pending investigations. The police have also forwarded a case docket to the Office of the Attorney-General for study and advice.
The allegations have not been established in court.
The Criminal Investigation Department has been invited to take over the criminal investigation, while the GES continues its administrative inquiry into how the complaints were handled.
The Attorney-General’s Office is expected to review the case docket and advise on the next steps.
