Collaborative reverse-engineering site decomp.dev is shutting down its public index and stopping new project submissions after its administrator said recent AI models have made game decompilation so fast that the site’s original community model no longer works as intended.
Launched in 2024, decomp.dev was built to track matching decompilation projects and help contributors collaborate on reverse-engineering games.
Its pseudonymous administrator, Encounter, said it has become increasingly difficult to distinguish primarily human-led projects from those heavily completed with AI.
New AI Models Have Accelerated Decompilation
Matching decompilation traditionally required developers to recreate source code that compiles into the same machine code as the original game, a process that could take years.
Encounter said AI began becoming noticeably more useful with Opus 4.6 and GPT-5.4 in early 2026, although those models still required substantial human cleanup.
GPT -6 Astra Changed the Game
More recent models such as GPT-6 Astra improved further. According to Encounter, they are better at following complex instructions, cross-referencing symbols and debug information, writing more natural code, and testing multiple source-code variations until they find a match.
They can also stay focused on longer tasks and produce results faster and more cheaply than earlier models.
AI Has Disrupted the Community Model
Encounter said AI can now significantly speed up decompilation with the right guidance and code review, but it has also created problems for open-source projects.
Some users have been forking existing decompilation projects and using AI to complete them, even when the original teams do not want AI contributions.
Others have used existing decompilation work to quickly release game ports without contributing to the underlying reverse-engineering effort.
Encounter also said the growing focus on quickly completing projects has weakened decompilation’s traditional purpose as a way to research and understand how games were originally built.
decomp.dev Is Removing Its Public Leaderboard
The site originally tracked completion percentages to motivate contributors when each small increase represented significant human effort.
Encounter said AI has turned that system into a numbers race, with some users simply spending tokens to increase completion percentages or rush toward producing ports.
As a result, decomp.dev has disabled its main public index and will no longer accept new projects.
The site will continue tracking existing projects, maintaining individual project pages and preserving historical data.
