Incumbent Mike Hurley has secured a third term as mayor of Burnaby.
At the time of publication, Hurley has received 19,126 votes, according to the City of Burnaby’s latest preliminary election results. Burnaby First’s Heymann Yip trails in a distant second place with 6,120 votes.
The former firefighter-turned-politician first ran in Burnaby as an independent candidate during the 2018 municipal election, where he beat out long-time mayor Derek Corrigan. According to Hurley’s website, his concerns over “long-time Burnaby residents losing their homes due to demovictions” motivated him to put his name forward in the 2018 race.

Hurley was faced with competition during the 2026 race, as he ran against Sabina Hsu, Bill Petrovas, Hanzhi Wang, Heymann Yip, and Michael Angelo ABCRobinHood (actual name is Yusuf Kaplan).
Hurley has also served as the board chair of the Metro Vancouver Regional District since 2024, which has been under scrutiny due to rising costs, major capital projects, governance, and the scope of its responsibilities.
In his upcoming term, Hurley promises to deliver 1,000 new affordable rental homes. He also pledges to address Burnaby residents’ concerns over large multiplex developments by continuing to pressure the provincial government to repeal Bills 25, 44, and 47, which have permitted up to six homes to be constructed on a single-family lot.
