Key Facts
- The dollar index closed at 102.41 on Monday, up 0.19% and keeping pressure on Latin American currencies and making local-currency bonds less attractive to foreign funds.
- Oil stays elevated after Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, which supports Mexican and Colombian export revenues but raises import costs for Chile and Peru.
- Investors are waiting on Argentina’s September inflation report where a print above the 1.9% consensus would force the central bank to keep policy painfully tight and hurt peso assets.
- US stocks ended Monday little changed, with the S&P 500 down 0.06%, limiting directional conviction for the region’s exchange-traded funds that track the American tape, from Mexico City to Buenos Aires.
- Brazil’s Focus survey lands at 08:30 BRT this morning, offering a read on inflation and Selic expectations while the Selic, the country’s benchmark interest rate, anchors the carry trade.
- Prediction markets price an 86.5% chance of a 25-basis-point Selic cut at the 3-4 November Copom meeting (Polymarket, 11:05 pm ET, 12 October).
Today’s Focus
The carry trade—borrowing in a weak currency to invest in a high-yielding one—is facing a fresh reality check. When the dollar is strong and US yields are high, money managers become reluctant to hold riskier assets in Mexico, Brazil or Colombia, no matter how tempting the local interest rate looks.
The main domestic event is in Buenos Aires. If Argentina’s monthly inflation stays stuck above 2%, the government’s stabilisation plan looks less convincing and the peso could come under fresh pressure. That would spill over into perceptions of the whole region, not just Argentina.
Meanwhile, elevated oil prices help exporters such as Colombia and Mexico but squeeze net importers like Chile. The regional board is likely to open with modest moves, waiting for US inflation data on Wednesday.
For Brazil, the real’s path matters most. A strong dollar pushes up imported costs, but Brazil also benefits from a relatively high Selic rate—so the currency is trading more like a carry magnet than a commodity currency today.
What matters today. The day hinges on whether the strong dollar and elevated oil keep risk appetite contained, or whether Argentina’s inflation reading gives traders a reason to sell local assets.

01 The overnight tape in one read
The global backdrop is one of caution rather than alarm. Wall Street ended Monday little changed, but the real story is the dollar’s stubborn strength, with the dollar index at 102.41.
Oil prices remain elevated after Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia. That lifts input costs for Chile and Peru but supports export revenues for Mexico and Colombia.
Monday’s close was a split tape: the Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.38% while the Nasdaq, heavy with tech stocks, slipped 0.44%.
The VIX, Wall Street’s fear gauge, closed at 15.21, a level that suggests investors are nervous but not panicked. For Latin America, that means no forced selling from global funds, but no fresh buying either.
Assessment — Carry appetite is fragile MEDIUM
The evidence is mixed. A firm dollar and elevated oil are clear headwinds for importers, but Wall Street is stable and Argentina’s inflation may actually come in below the worst fears. The main variable to watch is whether the real holds its recent strength once the Focus survey hits, because that will signal whether foreign funds are still willing to earn the Selic carry.
02 The board before the open
| Instrument | Level | Change | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 (close) | 7,807.24 | −0.06% | Flat—waiting for US CPI on Wednesday |
| Dow Jones (close) | 51,850.55 | +0.38% | Marginal risk-on bias |
| VIX | 15.21 | +2.49% | No emergency, no conviction |
| Dollar index | 102.41 | +0.19% | Firm — pressures carry |
| USD/MXN | 18.263 | −0.80% | Peso actually firmed — a mild outlier |
The table above shows a market that is not making big bets. The Mexican peso’s small gain against the dollar stands out, perhaps reflecting oil’s still-elevated level and a market that had already priced in a lot of bad news.
Brazil’s real is only marginally changed against the dollar at 4.9871, a level that suggests traders are waiting for domestic data and the US inflation report on Wednesday.

03 What the data shows — B3’s turnover leaders are quiet but telling
| Stock | Move | Turnover | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Petrobras (PETR4) | — | R$2.3bn avg | Energy bellwether—watching Brent |
| Vale (VALE3) | — | R$1.7bn avg | Iron ore still a China story |
| Itaú (ITUB4) | — | R$1.4bn avg | Banking heavy—sensitive to Selic |
| Bradesco (BBDC4) | — | R$968m avg | Profit-taking risk remains |
| Banco do Brasil (BBAS3) | — | R$920m avg | State-owned—policy headline risk |
The B3 scan shows which names Brazilian traders watch most. Petrobras remains the single most-traded instrument, which means oil’s direction will be felt in the first minutes of trade.
The big banks—Itaú, Bradesco and Banco do Brasil—are also heavyweights. With the Selic still high, these lenders enjoy fat net interest margins, but a strong dollar can cloud the outlook for foreign inflows.
04 Brazil and the currencies
The real is stuck in a narrow range near 4.99 to the dollar. B3 and Brazil’s markets were shut on Monday for the Our Lady of Aparecida holiday. That is a difficult balance: elevated oil supports Brazil’s energy exporters, and the Selic’s high carry still attracts some dedicated emerging-market funds.
Today’s Focus survey, a weekly central-bank poll of top economists, will show whether local forecasters are becoming more dovish on inflation or sticking to their current path. Any hint of faster easing would chip away at the real’s carry appeal.
Foreign flows matter because Brazil’s equity market depends heavily on external capital. When the dollar is firm, the opportunity cost of holding Brazilian stocks and bonds goes up, and a flat Wall Street does not help.
The service-sector data due later this week may offer a small read on domestic demand. But the bigger driver is still the global rate divergence between the US and Latin America.
05 The regional setup
| Index | Country | Change |
|---|---|---|
| IPC (Mexbol) | Mexico | +0.55% |
| Merval | Argentina | Closed (holiday) |
| COLCAP | Colombia | Closed (holiday) |
| BVL Perú | Peru | +0.64% |
| S&P 500 | United States | −0.06% |
Mexico’s IPC reference index, often just called the Mexbol, was the outlier gainer on the board, rising 0.55% to 66,411. Mexico also reported August industrial production up 3.5% from a year earlier, above the 2.6% forecast.
Argentina’s and Colombia’s stock markets were shut for holidays, while Peru’s BVL index rose 0.64%. The regional dispersion underscores that this is a market without a shared catalyst.
Chile’s market was also closed for the holiday; the country tends to suffer when oil is elevated and the dollar is firm, two factors present today.
06 The technical picture
The dollar index’s close above 102.4 keeps the pressure on emerging-market currencies. A break higher would force another round of local-currency bond selling across Latin America.
The VIX at 15.21 suggests no emergency. But with US inflation data due on Wednesday, traders are not adding risk at the start of a week that lacks conviction.
What Prediction Markets Say. Polymarket traders price a 25-basis-point Selic cut at the 3-4 November Copom meeting at 86.5%, with 9% for no change (US$50,444 traded, as of 11:05 pm ET on 12 October). Prices are real-money bets, not polls or central-bank guidance.
Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.
07 What to watch
- Argentina inflation: A print above 1.9% monthly would hurt the peso and signal the disinflation plan is losing momentum.
- US CPI report (Wednesday): The core inflation rate estimate of 2.5% will shape Fed expectations and therefore the dollar’s path.
- Brazil Focus survey: Any shift in Selic forecasts will move the real and interest-rate futures.
- Oil: If crude prices climb further, expect Petrobras and Mexican energy names to catch a bid.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does a strong dollar hurt Latin America?
Because investors borrow in dollars and invest in local assets. When the dollar is firm, the exchange-rate risk of holding Latin American bonds and stocks is higher, so funds demand a bigger return—or simply sell.
What is the Selic?
It is Brazil’s benchmark interest rate, set by the central bank. A high Selic attracts foreign money seeking yield, a trade known as the carry trade.
What is the Focus survey?
It is a weekly poll by Brazil’s central bank of professional forecasters, covering inflation, growth and interest-rate expectations. Markets watch it closely for shifts in consensus.
Why is Argentina’s inflation data the region’s key event?
Argentina has been trying to bring down very high inflation. If the monthly print stays above 2%, the credibility of that programme suffers and Argentine assets—and regional sentiment—take a hit.
