The Minnesota Timberwolves are making another significant investment in their future, securing one of their most important defensive players for an additional season.
Minnesota has agreed to a one-year, $40 million contract extension with forward Jaden McDaniels, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.
McDaniels' agents, Nima Namakian of Innovate Sports and Bill Duffy of WME Basketball, confirmed the agreement, which will keep the 26-year-old under contract through the 2029-30 NBA season.
Unlike a traditional multiyear extension, the agreement adds one season to McDaniels' existing contract, providing additional financial security while allowing him to potentially negotiate another deal in the future.
The agreement also makes NBA history.
According to NBA insider Michael Scotto, McDaniels is the first player in league history to sign an extension with three fully guaranteed seasons remaining on a non-maximum contract. The unusual structure gives McDaniels another $40 million in guaranteed money while preserving his ability to negotiate an additional extension as early as 2028, potentially setting him up for an even larger payday.
The extension represents another major commitment to a player who has developed into a cornerstone of Minnesota's defense.
Originally selected with the No. 28 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, McDaniels has spent his entire professional career with the Timberwolves. The 6-foot-9 forward has established himself as one of the league's most versatile perimeter defenders, frequently taking on difficult assignments against opposing teams’ best players.
However, his offensive development has also become a key reason why Minnesota and their fan base are so high on him.
McDaniels averaged a career-high 14.8 points last season while adding 4.2 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. He also shot 41.2% from three-point range, giving Minnesota another reliable offensive option alongside Anthony Edwards.
His production increased during the postseason, when he averaged 16.3 points per game and delivered a 32-point performance in Minnesota's series-clinching victory over the Denver Nuggets.
The Timberwolves have made several significant roster changes this offseason, including the additions of LaMelo Ball and Jonathan Kuminga. Those moves have created an opportunity for McDaniels to take on greater leadership responsibilities as Minnesota attempts to remain competitive in the Western Conference.
The veteran forward recently acknowledged that growth, emphasizing the importance of holding teammates accountable and helping younger players adjust to the NBA.
Minnesota's latest investment reflects its confidence that McDaniels can continue developing beyond his reputation as a defensive specialist.

With Edwards leading the franchise and McDaniels now secured through 2030, the Timberwolves have reinforced another important part of their long-term foundation.
The extension also gives McDaniels an opportunity to continue growing with the organization that drafted him while pursuing the championship that has remained out of reach.
Minnesota has made its commitment clear. McDaniels will remain a central part of the team's plans for years to come.
